I'm all for not Bobbing the tails. Seems like a very needless operation to me.:(

+1 If it was up to us, we wouldn't have bobbed our dogs tails.

Woodrow (now 2 1/2) in camo with me and sittin' around on the porch:p
Like any lab in another six months he should have his brains --Although he is smart enough to twist SWMBO around his paw now:thumbsup:

So well put:laughing:

Beautiful lab you have there.

Ours got her brains around 3 yrs old as well, although she always kept her "snorting, bucking horse excitement mode" trait until she died.

Thanks Sig -- yeah I know that "excitement mode"
Our old yellow was the same way, even with multiple knee operations and calcium deposits on the joints. We had not seen the red colour until we went to Woody's breeder, but still lots of people mistake him for a mutt or ridgeback.

No, we would never spoil a dog.

On the other hand, spoiled dog is better than spoiled kids.

To all you German Shepherd lovers out there, how are those dogs around kids that are about 7-10 years old?

My mom's collie is getting old and I would like to get her a dog that would be a good pet and also a good protector. I've never had a German Shepherd, always had bird dogs so I don't know their traits or mannerisms.

Any ideas on whether they would be a good protector/companion for an older woman? And not cause problems for grandkids?

I have thought about getting a somewhat trained 1 year old dog vs. going the puppy route. Any pros / cons to this?

Sid, any dog can be just what you want them to be, some have stronger inheritant traits,
I would suggest a medium sized mix/rescue for the elderly woman. They tend not to have as many ailments which results in smaller vet bills, and perhaps as you said, a 1-2 year old house trained dog (35-45lbs).
Pups need excersize and play time, and in turn you get a dog lees prone to chewing distructive behavior.
All of our dogs have always been very protective of of family and home.
