I now believe that people who adopt dogs and put the time in to save them are guaranteed a ticket to heaven. Plus, they get the most loyal dog they could ever want.

I don't need to die in order to experience the "reward" from rescuing my dog.;)

Well day 3 with the little border collie was better again. She is very food driven but would not even get out of her dog bed to take a treat. If I handed the treat to her while she was laying down she would eat it but would not get out of her bed. One time I was able to get her to stand up and take 3 steps to me and our Heeler, but then the wife came into the kitchen and boom, she plastered herself into a corner of the room. Going outside was better today, I did not have to half drag her. Once outside she is getting more comfortable on the 26' retractible leash, even running back to me when she is called. The rescue lady says she can can run like a gazelle, and I can sort of see that (for the first 26' anyway). At feeding time when she sees the dog dish there are no inhibitions and she dang near inhales her food and jumps out of her bed willingly. Her ribs show badly so I will let her add 5 lbs and see how she looks. Mostly I think I have to undo 2 years of crate mentality, give her some house skills and I will have another "best dog ever" rescue story.

When she puts her paw on you I have heard that's a good sign. They see you as belonging to them and want you to stay around is what I was told.

Tom I've had limited experience with Border Collies but here's mine. Over 50 years ago I spend a summer in the mt. with an old sheep herder 2 Border Collies and 2,500 sheep. After we came down out of the mts. in the fall I was left to look after them by myself for a while with a young Border Collie because the old man wouldn't leave his old one out of his sight and took it with him. Every thing was fine for a couple days until I raised my voice one day at the young dog BIG mistake. for the next 3 days I was one my own trying to keep the sheep under control he would only follow me around walking behind me. Then in the middle of the night I heard the dog crying and went out to see what was up. He was tangled in barb wire so I untangled him brought him into my shack and loved him up for a while. Next day all was well he went straight back to work my lesson was learned never raise your voice or holler at a Border Collie they are very smart and sensitive and only wish to please.

This is our 13 year old Beagle Kodi and my daughter who really loves him. His health has really been failing lately and I don't think he will be here much longer. The drawing is one my daughter pencil sketched of Kodi when she was 16 and Kodi was 11. My daughter had a hard time leaving for university because she was afraid Kodi might die while she was away. Tough times ahead but another life lesson. drawing.JPGShannenkodi.JPG

I think you may have something there judging from how she behaves.

I took her to a 2 acre fenced dog park today to test her recall and she did very well, coming back from a few hundred feet away. I think the rescue lady taught her that. Maybe not on the first command, but after 3 or 4 calls. That was while it was just her and our healer. Then someone came in with their well behaved dog, then it was cowering time at the bottom of a tree. Not submissive behavior but cowering. But progress is progress. I am now thinking 6 months rather than a year to have another best dog ever.

Your daughter has some artistic talent there. It is a tough thing dealing with a loved pet in their last bit of life.

Well things are progressing with the little rescue border collie. The vet says she is about 3 years old, but has excellent blood work and seems very healthy. The vet had me hold her while doing the exam since she is such a fraidy cat.

She is not house trained I found out the hard way. She still hasn't figured the TV out, keeps barking at it and looking behind it. She is still afraid of my wife for some reason even though there isn't a reason for it. I figure she reminds her of someone, maybe the dog hoarder that had her? Here she is off leash for the first time.

My Aussie does that, and I'm pretty sure he knows it's just the TV but has fun doing it anyway. He even recognizes certain commercials by the soundtrack and starts barking early because he KNOWS that half way through an animal shows up for just a few seconds.

His predecessor used to run to the door barking whenever a certain TV show intro would sound a doorbell...

Mine know when UPS is coming before they get to the house and they start barking and howling like coyotes. Wife says they know 10 minutes before I get home and start barking. We can't figure it out. I think some dogs, especially the Austrailian Shep are way smarter than we give them credit for.

We had a dog that knew full well the doorbell sounds were on TV but would bark just to get the other dogs to run to the door barking.

I just took my shedding fool into the vet for a 3 year rabies shot, by the time I left the bill was $408 .

I was just figuring up in my head after I got home, between his previous owner buying him as a puppy to what I have paid in vet bills, toys ext he's very close to or over $4000 and he's not even 4 yet. Will be 4 in April. He was 91lbs when I first got him and took him to the vet, he also had ring worm or one of those not so threatening worms, just today he's 109lbs.

You, but all the bad guys leave your place alone because he's on duty. Perps don't like 109 lb dogs. He probably saved you from all sorts of turmoil and you don't even know it. I'd say he's entitled to a nice bowl of ground beef, a belly rub and then a ride in the car with the window down. :D

I have owned the house going on 3 years and nothing has ever walked off from the house, I have had max about 2 years. I had a 4x6 trailer walk off from a unlocked barn before I got him.

Yeah one reason the bill was high is I ordered 12 months of heartguard (being he's over 100lbs he has to take the 100lb and 25lb doses) and I ordered 6 months of Nextguard which is a oral flee treatment, the vet wanted to retest him for heart worms so she drew blood and ordered for a stool sample to make sure all the worms are gone he had before. Also he got a 3 year rabies shot and yearly something else she said what it was and I zoned out lol, only one I said no to was the shot for kennel cough. The nextguard and both heartguard meds I get money back on ordering what I did. Like $50-$75 back total via main in rebate.

His job is to protect the house and he does that job well, I think I have a little over $1000 in vet bills and a crap load of toys, he goes threw them kinda fast. The previous owners bought him at petsco or petsmart for $1600 after tax, I have the receipt, they were a older couple and he became too much for them to handle so they decided to give him another home. They had him up to date on everything till 1 1/2 years old, they even had him chipped but never registered it lol, my vet registered it for me.

I b1tch about the money I have in him but I would do it again and continue doing so. He's the only dog I have ever owned I would say ok to a surgery vs putting him down. I get more joy for him than the money he makes me part with lol.

I don't care that he's a pure bred dog, I hate how much he sheds but every once and awhile you get lucky end up with a extraordinary dog and this guy is it, my sister has a boxer/ black lab and he's another, dogs on that scale I believe are hard to come by, like 1 out of 7 or 8 dogs fit into that category I would say.

No wonder you are broke.

It was deff a shock on my way out but the vet I'm at is one of the cheaper vets in the area, she's more reasonable on meds.

It was funny, max remembered her, as soon as she walked in he showed a little teeth and went to hide, he was really nervous the whole time which was a surprise because he did great with her the 3 trips before since I have had him, he won't need to go back for another 3 years.

my previous vet had our dogs on Heartguard and Nexguard. The current vet uses Trifexis, which is $700 per year for three dogs. The new border collie tested positive for whipworm. I've never had a dog with those before but the Trifexis protects against them which is good since I understand they are a bugger to get rid of with the eggs lasting for years in the soil.
