I have been reading about some PTO problems on the 3400.
Is it a big problem?

Does L3400 have PTO problems?

Mine works well, the only problem I have heard of is the cable that actuates the PTO can stick if not lubed occasionally. What have you heard?

My personal opinion (and that is all it is) was that concerns about the L3400's PTO were WAY overblown. What I am referring to was the PTO actually failing. There is one report on TBN that I can recall. I just traded in my L3400 with 300 hours and a good chunk of PTO use. I know that is not several thousand hours but I never had an issue at all.
What we have heard a lot about is the PTO not disengaging which I believe was addressed through some sort of upgraded part. I never got the part but never had the problem either. I kept the cable lubed every 10 hours. I might have just been lucky. I'm sure I'd be IRRITATED if I was plagued with this problem as some others have been.
I think the L3400 is a nice workhorse of a machine but I think you can do MUCH better with a L3130, L3240 for not much more money or the same amount of money - in the used market in particular. After the model is no longer current, tractors sell by HP in the used market. I'll bet you will find L3400s with the same hours as L3130s on private sales where people are asking for more money for the L3400s as it is a few more HP whereas the L3130 is a more capable tractor.
To summarize, having been a recent L3400 owner, if I had to do that size tractor again and was looking at the L3800, I'd be looking at L3240 or L3540 - NO QUESTION. Lots more for not much more $. And get the LA724 loader!
