You need insurance to protect you against insurance of others. Even though your friend will not sue you his medical insurance will sue you and force him to cooperate or be at risk of having to pay back everything that his medical insurance paid the hospital and doctors for his injury. I know I got one of those "you better cooperate with the investigators" from my medical insurance companies.

The insurance Companies hire out a third party to do the investigation into money recovery on injuries that happen on the property of others.

The third party investigators will start their investigation after you think everything is settled - up to three years after an accident.

If you have a situation where you could exposed to personal liability problems then an umbrella policy is a good buy. You get a lot of insurance for the premium paid.

No, but over the last 20 years I would of saved about $20,000, that if invested wisely would be worth a lot more than the policy will pay...

....and to think that some states outlaw gambling...

Yep.

One of our kids used to be pretty active in sports, and unfortunately, had many injuries that required doctors visits. We would get letters from the insurance company asking if the injuries were caused by an accident caused by another person.
