Do you like to drive?

I enjoy driving just to go somewhere, or someplace we don't normally go every day.

However, I can't stand the drive back and forth to work everyday. It is so monotonous! The trip to work and back is almost auto-pilot-- I know I got there, but I don't remember how!

In N.J. and some other states you will be ticketed for yapping on a cell phone while driving unless you are using a hand's free device but you still see people talking on them all the time.

Maybe driving would be more enjoyable if people would learn to obey the rule, "Slower Traffic Keep Right"

That would make a good discussion topic...
Dave, why don't you start the thread. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Aren't those things great. When I was doing a lot of travelling for work, I used to listen to those tapes all the time (pre CD days). They really made long road trips and waiting around airports a lot more enjoyable.

These days I hate to travel or drive anywhere. I do it when I have to otherwise my wife does most of the driving and I do most of the gawking around. I used to put 30K miles plus on my truck a year. These days it's less than 8k and I'm real happy about that. Driving is just no fun anymore. I'm so glad I live in a place where, when 2 friends meet on the road they just pull up and talk. People may get stuck behind them but there is no honking of horns, no cussing or swearing, no finger flashing, etc. In fact, you may just get out of your vehicle and walk up there to find out what they are talking about. Anyway, you know the conversation isn't going to take more than 5 minutes. This sure ain't Dallas.

My most enjoyable driving times occurred in the late '60's. early '70's, driving my beetle with a Porsche S90 engine and a pair of giant two barrel Solex carbs. That engine made much more intake noise than exhaust and I loved the sound of it. I accumulated 160000 miles on it before I drove it under a Cadillac (another story). After that it was many years before I experienced anything similar.

That was when we got our '97 Dodge 4x4 with Cummins engine three years ago. I love the sound and feel of that engine. I love to drive all over again. No radio, no phone, not much conversation, just the beautiful drone of that Cummins diesel. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hate it / love it. Hate my daily commute to work and back thru miserable traffic and ignorant and aggressive drivers. But I love to drive on vacation trips thru unpopulated country with beautiful scenery.

I would prefer to drive rather than ride, however, I have started limiting my cell phone usage during driving to only those calls that are absolutely necessary.

There are some interesting facts and statistics here regarding cell phone usage while driving www.iii.org/media/hottopics/insurance/cellphones/

If you talk and drive, even with a hands free unit, you are putting yourrself and others at risk. Check the fine print on your insurance poolicy also - you may be suprised. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

(I'm younger than most here, but I'll still put my opinion in here.)

As far as commuting goes, the shorter the better. The 20 miles from here into Downtown Dallas takes about an hour using most routes.

As far as driving in general. I love it. I just got back from driving from my home in SW Dallas to Baltimore, MD and back. Six states and just under 3,000 miles and eight days.

I ended up going through DC on my way into Baltimore, And that was a small nightmare, but only a minor setback.

I really enjoyed the trip, Didn't meet too many bad drivers. Got to see some light snow, and some *very* beautiful countryside. I hope I can take my kids along that same route through West Virginia one day.

On the phone, I'm probably just as bad if not worse than others, But I try to limit the calls to less than 5 minutes and I really try to ignore them whenever I'm driving after dark.

That all being said, I'm headed to Bryan/College Station tommorrow. Another 400 miles and that puts me over 4,000 miles this month.

I used to love to drive, for an extended period of time I averaged more than 50K miles per year. Now I average 10-12K per year and that feels like too much. As for the cell phones I really try to not "talk & drive" but I do from time to time.
