Do you have a drone?

Late to this thread.

Wondered if you were familiar with TBN member VON? He has not been active for a long time, but does occasionally pop in. He rebuild Mog's, sells parts etc. Also the only member I am aware of that had his own Zamboni for a backyard ice rink.

There are old thread here on TBN about his first Unimog restorations.

He turned it into a full time gig Diesel Unimog New & Used Parts & Vehicles | VonsMog

Yup, have one (Mavic Pro), it's tagged, and has a Marco Polo tracking device on it in case it decided to go wandering for some reason. Lets me take nice pictures of the farm as we clean it up. We used to buy photo's from those guys that fly over and then come knock on your door a few weeks later offering to sell you a picture of your farm (speaking of privacy, it's been going on for years guys, lighten up.). Now I just fly up, find the perfect angle, and snap the pic. Don't have to worry if the lawn is mowed or I left the old farm truck in the middle of the lawn when they fly over, since I know when I'll be taking the picture myself ;) Amazing tools/toys. We used it to fly along the drainage ditch and find where it had dammed up, would have been hard to otherwise, not enough snow for snowmobiles, but to much snow for quads, just fly along the route and voila.

Plus....:

I agree a Drone will eventually be used for evil purposes.

After you made that statement you sortta derailed. One million Drones were sold in the U.S. during the last holiday season (Christmas) alone. I think it's beyond banning them. The "henny penny powers that be" haven't been able to ban assault rifles. So they have plenty of "causes" to fight before they get to Drones.

It slightly alarms me when people associate terrorism to the tool in use during the act. :confused3:
You're missing the point entirely by trying to relate drones and firearms...I originally made a bad analogy that I later corrected...there is a huge difference between even the most over the top personal assault weapon and the delivery capability of a sophisticated drone. I didn't say there would be anything like a mandatory confiscation...there will just be extreme limitations on where they can be operated...i.e., almost no where in public...and no where above any land the operator does not own and at a limited alt.

Given that SUV's, garbage trucks and knives are used by terrorists, no doubt drones will be as well.

So legislators will propose extreme restrictions on their freedom, and some people will go along with it. Since 1755.

No, I get your point completely. I just think you are a bit naïve about Drones. Research the FAA website. You'll see there are already many FAA restrictions in place. If those restrictions are abided by, a Drone will never be used as you think. As is the case with almost any "tool". Again, I get concerned when people start blaming the "tool" rather than the person handling it.

Well stated.

You are the one that is naive...and you continue to consider a drone as basically the same as a firearm (i.e. "tool")...it's not...a sophisticated drone is much, much more...

You keep mentioning restrictions/ laws etc...they are like locks, they only keep out honest people...

Sophisticated drones, once hacked and programmed can be made to no longer require "a person to handle it"...they "can" be made to deliver a payload without any human interaction...they can be made to sit for months etc. before the programmed date/time etc. triggers the programmed flight...the scenarios are endless.

It's naive to think of a sophisticated drone as just another "tool" or toy...

We've moved into Star Wars now.

I agree, we have the technology you speak of. I contend if it was as easy to do as you portray it would have already happened. Must be a little harder than you casually describe.

A Cell Phone can be used to detonate an explosive device, and already has been. Are you suggesting surrendering your Cell Phone? You first.

I've been around Drones professionally since 2003. I have a deep understanding of the capabilities of Drones in regards to destructive behavior as well as all the other tools mentioned so far.

What did you learn when you studied the FAA website?

Last year I was at a military/defense trade show in Taiwan and they were demonstrating 'law enforcement' drones that 'shot' a capture net to catch fleeing subjects. It was quite impressive. The net easily tangled up the guy running and slowed him down pretty much to a crawl! I was shocked and impressed.

Wow, that is very cool. Didn't know that was available.

I was thinking of my conversation with pine and remembered seeing a video of an RC plane that a guy had fastened a pistol to. Rigged up electronic triggering and was shooting at targets as he whizzed by. :)

The technology has already been exploited...surrendering a cell phone? LoL...cell phone firmware probably has as many back-door access keys (owned by three letter gov. acronym agencies) as hobbyist drone firmware does...LoL...
why would I waste my time on a public gov. web site?...really!

BTW... I remember in the early 60's watching some RC WWI model bi-planes having aerial dogfights with C02 bb machine guns on the model airplanes...
