do you drain water from the fuel filter before the dash warning lights?

Right or wrong I don't.

The filter will separate the water, water is heavier and will settle to the bottom. Water at the bottom will trigger the light. So I guess I'm relying on the technology to perform as designed.

My older tractors had a sight glass and I only drained if water was present. Never had to drain except to change the filter.

If you buy your fuel from a high volume source you should be okay. From what I see, more water issues have been from the pump/supplier than from condensation issues.
