Hi All,

This is my first post to TBN. I just moved to a house with about 3 acres from a place with such a small lawn I couldn't justify a small lawn tractor (plus I probably would have killed myself on the slope /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif ). The new place has about an acre of lawn (very level), a steep poorly maintained paved driveway about 350 ft long - a flat area about 5 cars wide at the top big enough to play half-court basketball, about 0.5 acre of garden, an acre of woods with quad trails from the previous owners, and roughly a half acre of dirt destroyed by the quads that I would like to reclaim as lawn. I don't think I'm going to do anything with the quad trails in the woods except let them go back to nature. If not for the steepness of the driveway I would probably buy a run-of-the mill garden tractor with a snowblower attachment and hire out the grading work to reclaim the lawn ruined by the quads - I'm just scared to take a 2WD tractor to the bottom of the hill and not be able to make it back up in the snow. Now, if I had a BX I have no worrys about making this trek in the snow plus I could do the grading work myself with a rented rake or box scraper. But if 2WD with chains and weights will do I can save a lot of $$$. Your considered opinons?

TIA,
MCA

I only have about 5 hours on my 7800, but I already used the 4WD to get me out of some slippery mud. I got the turf tires because I will be mowing and picked up chains if I go in the woods. I tried to pop some small tress out and needed to 4WD to push in the wet grass. Using the FEL to dig into a pile of crush I needed the 4WD after I softened up the mud after a few tries. I would recommend the 4WD if you can afford it. In all cases so far switching to 4WD got me going. I can't even imagine going into the woods without it.

I just got my BX and I have not been disappointed in the least. For the last 2.5 years I have suffered with a garden tractor without even knowing it. Grass cutting time is way down and my back loves the FEL. I think you need to consider a test.

My first tractor was a 2 wheel drive John Deere 420, 20 hp. with weights chains, and a blower on the front. Went great down hill but there it sat at the bottom of my driveway for a while blocking my driveway(400 ft.) when it got stuck. And my driveway isnt real steep. You need 4wd. The tractors you see at the home centers just cant handle lots of land thats rough or long driveways. They wont last. Do yourself a favor, buy something with 4wd and a blower, front or rear, if you get any substancial snow. Thats a pretty long driveway to try to plow regularly

You certainly need a serious garden tractor. The reason I would recommend the BX is simply price. When you look at the heavy garden garden tractors, no matter what their color, the BX is in their price range. With the BX (or any other sub-compact), you get 4wd, a much nicer FEL than any garden tractor, and 3pt hitch/rear PTO.

HOLY SMOKES!!!!
I'm horrified at the thought of a property like you've descibed without a 4WD diesel tractor WITH a FEL!!!
Choose how you wish, it's your money, but gee wiz...
I have less than an acre and used my FEL for an hour and my mower for an hours last Saturday alone. When digging with the FEL, my turfs slipped a bit but 4WD fixed that up. Now there are two gas lantern posts with 5 gallon bucket sized chunks of concrete sitting for the garbage man (geeze I hope he takes em).
Little to NO effort and way fun.

I guess I'll add my .02 also. I had a 2wd "garden" tractor (a Power King 1618, which was a little larger than a bx) with a fel. Got stuck at the bottom of the driveway during the last big snow storm even with filled tires and weights. The bx blows it away. W/ 4wd its like a little bulldozer. If you want a very small, capable machine the bx (or the green / blue models) are an excellent choice.
Have fun lookin'.

don't waste your money, buy the bx.Think about it like this.A garden tractor will be with you maybe 10 years or so,but the bx could be with you a lifetime and be all the tractor you will ever need.Buy what you need the first time.It is an investment ,not an expence you'll regret.

I think the BX22 is for you also. Think about this, how many compact diesel tractors have you seen used for sale. The dealers in So. California put them in the rental fleet just to have used ones on the lot. Then they deduct a very few bucks for the wear & tear. You should be able to sell your tractor in a few years if you are willing to give it up, for nearly what you paid. If you buy a 2WD gas tractor you will be lucky to get scrap price after 5 years. One of the guys I work with has a 12 year old B7200 with loader and backhoe. He just was offered $6500 by his neighbor, which is $1000 more than he paid 12 years ago. These little diesel 4WD's hold their value. Besides they are relaxing back savers.

You mean there's a handshake too??!! That's it I'm convinced! Now I just need to find the best deal on this beast within a few hours of CT.

I'm gonna look for a BX2200D with a 60" deck and a snow blower. The info in the green or orange small tractor?? thread looks like a good place to start. Any favorite dealers other than the ones listed over there? Ones in NH would be very interesting ... if you know what I mean.

Get the BX, otherwise you'll forever be wondering how much better life would be if your had only bought that BX. Plus once you have one, you'll find all sorts of uses for it that you never condidered possible.
