I have a TO 20 that won't stay in time. after rough timing the distributor @ 7 degrees, it cranked right up, ran for about 5 minutes, then quit. it wouldn't start back up, so I checked the distributor rotar after setting it back to 7 degrees & it was not pointing to #1. This happens almost every time it cranks & runs for a short while. Could something inside the distributor be faulty. the gear on the bottom of the distributor looks good, as does the camshaft gear. I've thought of trying to find a used distributor, but $150 is the best price I've found thus far. any thoughts on what to check would be grealy appreciated.

Is the gear on the bottom held on by a roll pin? If it is check to make sure it has not sheared letting the gear slip on the shaft. Just looking at the gear would not show this problems as the sections of the roll pin will not drop out.

Also, I am not sure what holds the distrubutor itself from rotating, but make sure you get it tight when setting timing as well. But the roll-pin (or whatever holds the gear on) is probabally the most likely cause.

Easy way to determine is re-set the timing and mark the distributor somewhere with a reference to the tractor. Start the tractor. When the timing gets screwed up again, look to see if the distributor itself moved, or of it is just the insides that got out of whack. If the distributor moved, it is something wrong with the clamping set-up that locks the distributor down. If it didnt move but the rotor is still out of time, gear is the most likely cause.

the pin is in tact, however, there is some vertical slack in the shaft...I'd say around 1/16-1/8". I may need to check & make sure the shims are in place, or add more to take up the slack. there is also about the same rotational slack. thanks again

Does the dist shaft drive the oil pump too? If so, it's probably good the motor is shutting down...

rotational play may be the advance you are feeling..
