At last found a site which shows a much closer resemblence to my engine (although this is a 3-cyl engine), and actually shows how to disassemble the solenoid and IP. Looks like fun ahead...

Curious what the outcome was here. I have a similar problem on a DK45S cranking but not starting or starting sometimes. Especially hard starting when cold.

i had the issue on my DK45 years ago. it was the stop solenoid failure. i removed solenoid and manually opened rails. engine fired right up. be careful, as you need to manually shut the tractor off the same way. i had to reinsert stop solonoid to shut down tractor. you could also shut off fuel supply. this was just to try and determine cause. there are 2 relays that control this stop unit. they coiuld also be starting to fail.
