My Kioti DK 40 clunks when four-wheel-drive is either engaged or disengaged. It seems to me that the noise is getting louder.
Is there anything I should be looking for or at to prevent an expensive fix?

What causes the clunk when the front axle is activated?

Don’t know the answer, but on my MF1540 the 4wd mechanism at the front axle has a zerk in it that I keep greased, so maybe just make sure that yours is greased if you have a zerk. They can be hard to spot; sometimes have to feel around for them.

I would start by raising the front end and turning each wheel by hand to see if I could isolate where it is coming from. If you are not mechanically inclined take it somewhere to be worked on. I would not drive it till it is fixed. Likely a gear or bearing creating the sound.

Maybe check wheel lug nuts are tight first. Could be that is what you are hearing.
