Oil & Fuel DK35 with low engine oil pressure

/ DK35 with low engine oil pressure #21
Hi Guys
If the crank is twisted or bent, you (in most cases) should have had a top end knock with the pistons hitting the valves. If you drop the mains out one by one, then these should also show signs if the crank is bent by way of uneven wear patterns. One thing to check if it is not too late, but were the mains all fitted the correct way around? Just recently we had an 1106 series Perkins with the rear main back to front. Tractor managed 900 hours before it became a problem. This is a 120 hp machine that has to work to earn it's keep. As has already ben mentioned, I'd pay particular attention to the lube pump. This engine (DK35) is a very reliable unit and not over stressed in normal hard work. I'm not saying that it wont be a bent or twisted crank, just unusual if it is for this engine (in my experience anyway).
If you need any more info, let me know and if I can help I will.

Thanks for the info Trac-Tech the wear on the center two mains looked good/normal just the front and rear were worn on the bottom half. The front main is a pressed in solid main the rear is split with split trust bearings on both sides. The center two mains are split. All the rod end bearing looked good and no signs of valves hitting the pistons. That front main is a pain because it's pressed in so I have to take the block to a machine shop to get it pressed out/in. Takes a good size press to fit the block.

I think I'm going to check the oil passages as someone already suggested. Otherwise I guess this failure was a factory defect or this engine isn't as strong as everyone thought. However, with four mains that are less than 6" apart center to center I can't amagine it wouldn't be strong as **** so I'm leaning towards a factory defect. To bad I'm outside the warranty period 6 years old but only 540 hours.

Hope no one else has to go through this because the parts are cheap but the labor would be in the K$ but since I'm dong the work only $155 for parts. You have to have a dedicated space in your shop to do this kind of job I'm lucky I just built a 30x40 shop.

Tractorlegend, The saddles being out could cause the problem i.e. any saddle that was out of tollerance could cause pressure on the mains. In this case, the front and rear bottom mains are worn which would mean the middle main(s) might be out in an upward direction? Does this make sence? If this was the case it would be a manufacturing defect? This would be easy to check by just measuring the diameter of the saddles and comparing them to each other. I wouldn't think the bore would be out or could it? Tedder

Hi Tedder
There is a possibility that the mains could be out of line, Not so easy to check although the bearing shells will show some tell tale signs. Would need to get the block into a line bore machine to check it for sure .
If it is that, I'd get the crank crack tested as it should be after those hours show up if there is a crack of course.
Something off beat to check would be the relief valve on the lube side. Check that it is not stuck open and that is where the oil pressure has gone? Sometimes it can only be a little piece of swarth that will hold it open.
As you mentioned, are the centre mains worn on the top side? I'm sure there is something obvious, it will be just looking in the right place to find it?
Maybe post some pics and I'm sure someone will notice something to help.
Cheers

Sorry about not updating the status of my rebuild. Well i mic'd the mains and rod ends and all checked out. so i replaced the mains and rod ends (just to make sure). checked the oil pump and it was good no wear. got it all back together and it started up just like clock work. now my oil pressure is 75 cold and 60-65 hot alot of deference from before. have been using it for chipping and schreading all the ice storm damage every thing runs great. I think the cause fo all this was the haying equipment was too big for my tractor so i guess i abused my tractor. I just ordered a jd 244T, jd #5 sickle mower and a #15 international rake. the baler requires only 26 hp pto to operate so won't cause damage. tedder :)

Thanks for the update.

It's always helpful and appreciated when we hear the ending & your's sounds like it turned out just fine.

Good luck with the new equipment.
