DIY telescopic log loader tractor
Hi, surfing the net I came across this ingenious farmer who transformed his same into a telescopic crane with a claw to lift logs. He broke the telescopic jib of an old Atlas crane and mounted it on the loader of his same. What do you think of this DIY setup? Thanks. It would be complicated to replicate it, perhaps using an old loader shovel and recycling an old crane arm. Which loader shovel could be adapted for the purpose? Thanks.

That looks like it would be very useful at the landing, or at the mill.

I guess it is a question of what type of fabrication skills and equipment do you have. Making the rear pivot mount would take some metal work and I have no idea on how you calculate stress so for one of when in doubt make it stout.

The extending boom is a nice feature but suspect could easily over stress the front axle

I dont know how familiar you are with Lull type telescoping forklifts; Telehandlers/whatever you prefer to call them. It haves a Massive ammount of counter weight to counter act a load on a telescoped boom. You would likely need around 8000# behind the rear axle to have a meaningful lift capacity at even 10-12 ft forward of the loader.

I have been seeing ads for a new John Deere, articulated loader with telescoping boom. My first thought, turn that thing, with center articulation, will lifting a load upto a roof, and the world suddenly ends as the center of gravity moves...
