There is a an old Dixie Chopper listed locally without a motor offered for well under $100. The owner says it is complete except the motor, but I have not been to see it yet. Your thoughts on whether it is worth the time to put a new engine on?

I would definitely buy it.

I used Dixie Chopper for about 20 years, and I still have three of them. Two 60 in, and a 42 in.

I have replaced motors several times.

The 25 HP vertical Kohler is a good engine, and easy to install.

Honda.

Depends on the pulley hub as to the engine shaft size.

You can probably get a new 25 for about $1200, maybe less.

You should be able to work on just about everything on the Chopper .

Thanks J.J. I am too often too much of an optimist when it comes to these things and I am just worried it is missing important stuff. I would not credit the current owner knows much about it and I don't need another big project, but if this could be repowered I thought for that small amount of dough this would be a good (hopefully minor) project. I've re-powered some other stuff and it has so far been relatively simple, but I don't know how long this has been sitting and how well it was preserved.
One general question - does a replacement engine require a generator/alternator? I know on some other units they utilize an electric clutch and you gotta have some juice to operate.
Thanks guys!

Dixie Choppers run from $5000 to $12,000

My 42 has an electric clutch.

The 60 in Chopper clutch is manual lever.

You could look at the parts manual for that model Chopper and determine what is missing.

Yes, you need voltage.

Most engines have an alternator to charge the battery.

The carb probably has a solenoid on it.
