Again, put as much angle in the disc as possible. It looks like you have adjusted it to be a little angle as possible rather than the most angle. It will be harder to pull with more angle, but it will turn the grass and soil better without rapping up the grass.
I agree that a bush hog will be better as the first pass for this wild area. Also, the ground needs to be a bit dry before disking. If it is wet, it is going to stick to the disc blades and whatever is in the dirt will rap around the disc axles.

Man, I don't envy you cutting all that grass from around the disk axles, but it has to be done before any more disking can be done. It isn't going to cut now regardless of what you do to it.

Agree, you need to install some disc scrapers so it sheds the sticky dirt/grass from the blades. See your dealer on purchasing and installation of them. Many disc will not come with scrapers but should have the mounting holes for them. If not then it will be a hefty chore to install them. Alternately to having scrapers, the soil has to be rather dry before doing any work. This may be hard to do in Hawaii with all the feet per year of rainfall.

Yeah, he may have weather working against him. I don't think I've ever saw an offset disc with scrapers. Very few are adjustable. They are intended to do heavy tillage work in dry soil. the amount of tillage is determined by depth of cut.

My offset disc came with scrapers front and rear and you have 3 adjustable settings for cutting. To the OP if the weather would allow it I would as others suggested mow the grass as low as possible wait a couple of weeks make me about two left handed laps around that field for a firebreak catch the wind right and set fire to it, it will be a piece of cake for that offset harrow of yours after that. Around here you don't see any without, if you do try to use one it ends up like the pics , a balled up mess.

The only offsets I've saw here are large ones pulled by 400HP+ tractors or dozers. Never saw one with scrapers. Don't think I've ever saw one adjustable either. The OP's certainly isn't.

It certainly looks to me like it has several holes for adjustment of the gangs. (see the photos)
The more "set" that you have in the disc, the slower you can go and still turn over the sod. It is also harder to pull when the gang angles are at the optimum.

Upon further study, you are right, it is certainly adjustable!!!

Not sure any adjustment is going to prevent the "balling up" problem though.

Excellent advice.

What diameter are the pans on the Disc Harrow you are using? If the pans are 18" to 22" in diameter, it will take multiple passes to mix soil to 6" soil depth. Disc Harrows with 18" to 20" diameter pans are SECONDARY TILLAGE implements.

With pan diameter of 24" or greater, turning a short mowed field should be a one or two pass task.

We had several 40' disk back on the farm and they were all adjustable and had scrapers but don't believe any amount of adjustments can overcome what the OP is dealing with! The only option you have is mow or burn off unless you want to spray first. Then with the disk set as aggressive as possible I believe you will get the results you are looking for. No big deal just a little more time.

I remember the old disc balling up like that. Only happened when working the ground when it was too wet, never when it was dry. I think wet ground is the problem, the grass is just sticking to the wet dirt between the discs.

We lease the land so burning is not an option. Have you tired removing every other disc?

Offset Discs with 26" pans weigh 6,500 pounds on the light side and 8,000 pounds on the heavy side, depending on width.

With 26" pans and 6,500 pound weight you have implement pressure of around 475 pounds on each pan.

The compares to implement pressure of 35 pounds to 80 pounds per pan on Tandem Disc Harrows commonly discussed here. Then you have concrete riding on top.

There is nothing you can do to improve implement performance. You need better field conditions:


1. Wait for the land to dry.

2. Scalp the land with a mower first.

3. Apply herbicide or seek permission to burn. (Hawaii's farmland conditions are very different from continental US farmland conditions. I am not convinced burning will kill what you are dealing with in vegetation.)

4. Use the Offset Disc when field is fairly dry. No mud. Disc adjusted to an aggressive angle, not "flat".

I see nothing about that disc that would indicate 6K lb weight.
