I can't seem to get my gas tank clean, any tips or ideas?

Have you removed it or trying to flush it still installed?

It is water, trash, etc?

It is much easier to have the tank removed.

If there is rust of gelled fuel in there I would put a hand full of washers and nuts in there along with a degreaser solvent and shake it around until clean. You might have to repeat the process a few times.

I have did this on a small copper fuel tank and used motomaster hand soap (the textured sand like stuff) in place of a degreaser. It polished the tank up great.

here's a 2 step flush that gets out just about everything.

1, get a gallon of each:

laq thinner

driveway cleaner that removes rust stains.


neither should cost over 10$ unless prices have went up drastically.

put in the laq thinner and slosh around vigorously. allow to set and slosh some more. just about anything that was gas solvated will disolve in laq thinner.

alternately. acetone could be used.. but i like laq thinner better.

drain that off and wait a bit in the sun for that to flash off.

next.. add the driveway cleaner. slosh.. set.. slosh.

rust in the tank when viewed should turn black.

rinse with water.

then dump in a pint of rubbing alcohol and a good glug glug glug of mineral spirits or naptha.. etc. slosh around alot... drain. should flash dry in the heat in minutes.

remove tank tap and clean up reinstall and go.

Hey Soundguy, mind being brand specific on the driveway cleaner you use..?? I checked out the big box stores online last night, and they have 30 some different ones. I want one that will work, and not have a hit & miss till I find one that will. I need to clean out the tank on my old OS-6 McCormick-Deering here pretty quick, so as to get it moved here from the other farm I'm selling...

i hit lowes and found the cheapes bulk/gallon one they had that said it removed rust / iron spots on concrete..

if you want a non cheap one that for sure works. CLR calcium-lime-RUST

it costs more. but that's the one name i know off the top of my head.. the other brands I don't recall.

in general.. you see phosphoric acid used in those cases. IE.. rust remover...
