What were/ are your favorite dirt/trail bikes to own and ride ?

I have a 1982 Yamaha XT550 and a 1988 Honda NX650.

Both are too big and heavy and geared too fast in 1st gear for riding in the woods. I would like to get something a little better suited for trail riding. Both bikes were bought new and currently have less than 3600 miles on each of them.

I am hoping to get a 350cc some day.

If I could afford it I would get myself a new Suzuki RM-125 or RM-250. I like a nice light 2-cycle for dirt riding and up on the sand dunes. If I am going to be doing a lot of woods and trail riding I like a 4-cycle machine. I don't have much time for dirt riding anymore but I still enjoy motorcycles. I made a comprimise back in 2000 and bought a Suzuki DRZ400s. That is a dual-sport bike suitable for both on and off road use. A street legal dirt bike straight from the factory. I doesn't do either task especially well but it allows me to dabble in both without needing two bikes. It's too heavy for dirt use and too light for street use but I manage to make due. It is certainly better than having neither.

My Bultaco Pursang 125 from 1972. I am currently rebuilding it. I have owned and raced many dirtbikes. recently I had a Honda CRF450. The baddest MXer on the planet--totally awesome but more bike than an old guy needs so I sold it. I also have a Bultaco 250 Pursang project.

I loved those NX650's. I wish they had caught on more in the US.

I had a CR450. Drum brakes, 4spd open classer. It was a pretty fast bike(too fast for me). It ran good though. Fast!!!

My first bike was a Honda Trail 70. What a nice little bike. I wish I had that today. Thank goodness I don't still have that bathing suit /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

When I turned 12 and wanted more speed, I bought a 1974 Hodaka Super Rat.

You would have liked the CR250 a buddy sold last year. It was a '76 I believe, which he had owned since new. I had ridden it just a bit; that this would go like gangbusters. Didn't have much brakes or suspesion though, as compared to newer monoshock bikes.

My first dirtbike (cough) was a Yamaha 60cc with lights, turn signals and probably a mirror /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

We zipped around the woods behind our houses. Then in 1980 I bought my OWN dirtbike (verses parental gift) and bought sight unseen, the YZ-465 when it first came out... quite a step up /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Sold it couple years later for what I had in it.. fast forward to couple years ago and now living with some acreage around me I got what I WANTED to get back in the 80's... a Maico.

Found a 1983 Maico 490 on internet that was literally taken apart and stuffed into 4 boxes. Dude ran a bike shop and had this on internet "for sale" (who'd want to buy a box of bolts??) to strike up hits on his site.

Well, my wife bought it for me at my direction (for birthday /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif) and I had the honor, pleasure, shere delightful enjoyment of putting it back together piece by piece while getting frame restored, new motor components...

I really DO wish that $^@#+#%&*(#$) (censored /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif) kickstarter was on the "right" side though. that left side kickstart with that high compression about kills me. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

It does screammmmmmmmmm though. Nothing like knowing you can just twist that right grip a tad more if ya need to, want to, or have the kahunas to. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I had a 198? YZ465. Almost impossible to get started - I swear that a kick on the starter was only good for one revolution on the crank. That was a scary bike, though - my 200+ pound self would keep the front tire on the ground (most of the time) and you could open that thing up in third or fourth gear and feel the rear tire sliding around. I sold the thing purely because it was so much bike, and it wasnt much fun running through the woods at 60 MPH /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

My first bike (and probably my favorite) was a '72 TS250. That bike went everywhere, did everything, and never complained. The only things that broke in 4 years was the oil pump and the throttle cable. It didn't look like much, but I still regret getting rid of it. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

My current bike doesn't exist - the wifey has become scared of motorcycles (even though she had one when we were dating). /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
