Tractor
John Deere 855
I am looking at buying either a JD 655 0r 755. I really dont need a really large tractor. But my question is....Are the transmissions and rear ends the same between the 655 and 755? I know the engine HP is different. But they also look like they have different rear wheel sizes so I was wondering about the tranny etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Greg

I would look to the larger hp model. Some tasks take alot of power and the load of the hydro will also affect how it performs. If all you need is a mmm it wouldn't make a big difference. You don't mention if you have two candidates picked out. If so price, condition, hours, attachments can be the determining factor. Good luck with the search. Component wise there can't be much difference. The parts man at JD should be able to tell you the difference.

The 655 is sized more like what we now refer to as sub-compact tractors, with its garden tractor size tires. With its very short wheelbase and lower power the only mower deck it can fit is the 50 inch. It also has less hydraulic capacity. The JD charts show very few implements it can run. The break-point there is at the 755 and up. The only difference between the 755 and 855 is wheelbase and engine power. So for maximum usefulness I suggest at least the 755.

Thanks for the great reply.

For Hydraulic Capacity....do you mean hitch lift in lbs? Oil tank capacity?

I like the short wheel base of the 655.

The hydraulic flow for a 655 is about 4 gpm, the 755 has about 5.5 gpm. Would like to know what led you to select the 655 or 755? What are you needing to accomplish or what tasks does this unit need to handle?

Lift capacity is the same on both. The hydraulic pump capacity for operating implements is lower at 4.0 gpm vs 5.6 gpm, but the working pressure is the same at 2050 psi.

What do you plan to use it for? Small tire size will limit lift range of three point, and 50 inch deck is not real big. Maybe these are not a concern for your applications. The big reason I bought a 755 over the 855 is the shorter wheelbase for maneuverability, and I did not want the 72 inch deck so I understand what you are saying.

Still, look ahead at what you may want to do later. I had a JD 430 L&G tractor for a few years and while I was pleased with the engine and the 60 inch deck, it became clear I needed larger tires and four wheel drive to do my work. In some ways the 655 would have been a downgrade for me. Smaller engine and smaller deck than the 430. After 17 years my 755 and its various implements such as the loader still serve me well and do all I need.

In the end though, look at all the tractors and decide what works best for you. If you want more technical details on the 655 just ask. I have all the manuals.

The mower size is not as much of an issue for me. I would rather use a rear finish mower anyway. The MMM just seem to be in the way when you have the loader on.

I would imagine that the rear tires could be upgraded to the 755 size?

I do not think (could be wrong) the tires can be upgraded to 755 size. At a minimum there would be no clearance for the 50 inch deck. I guess not a problem if no MMM, but if it is 4WD both front and back would need to be upgraded. Could be other clearance issues there. Keep in mind larger diameter tires can lower the available torque to the ground, but again may not be an issue for you.

JD755,

Yes, if you have the comparitive specs, that would be very nice. I guess the short form of my question and speculation is:

It looks like the only difference between the 655 and 755 (except tire size and MMM capacity) is the 755 has a larger engine and therefore larger front nose. Is this right?

I'd also suggest the 755. Nice little machine.
But the main reason I'd suggest the 755 is the parts situation. 755 is still pretty popular even though it hasn't been built in 10-12 years.
You know...I can't even remember seeing 655's being advertised on the used market.

Agree with Roy. 755 is common but pretty much never see a 655.

One thing about a short wheelbase is that it mostly is an advantage only when using a MMM. Put on a RFM and that small advantage goes away. The 655 is not capable of operating a 60 inch RFM due to its low power. The 755 can operate either a 60 or 72 inch RFM.

Just noticed those specs did not include wheelbase.

655 = 51 inches
755 = 57 inches
855 = 64 inches

FYI other than wheelbase, the differences between 755 and 855 are because early model 755 came with 31 inch tires and no 3PH. Later 755 came with the same 33 inch tires as 855 and the 3PH became standard equipment. Also by then the weight difference came down to just 35 pounds.
