Greenhorn question: I have both diesel and kerosene at home - the latter for a heater. There is one tank where I'm not sure what's in it, diesel or kerosene. How disastrous would it be if I accidentally put kerosene in the Yanmar? Thanks.

Kerosene is just a higher grade of diesel. Its perfectly fine to run it in a diesel engine. The only negative is that you are useing fuel that is more expensive. On the positive side, kerosene is used to flush out a diesel system and clean up your engine. There are better additives that you can buy for diesel fuel then kerosene, but lots of people still use kerosene for this reason.

Kerosene is what is used in most parts of the US to make winterized diesel fuel. Now with ULSD they have to use ULSK (ultra low sulfur kerosene) to make the winter blend. In addition to higher cost one other downfall of kerosene is that it does not provide as much power. In other words it will take more of it than it would straight diesel to get a job done.
