two john deere Sabres (2554-Scotts) and 4410 john deere ,Allis Chalmers WD , 5' Cub Cadet Zero turn
I recommend most of us "Grandpa's" should write the words "DIESEL FUEL ONLY" on the backside inside of the fuel door. A fine tip white paint pen permanent paint is what is needed. Twice in the last few years I was looking for a good used tractor I came across a tractor that grandpa died and one of the grandchildren who used the tractor many times over many years was helping grandma with the snow or garden and fueled up with gasoline. The engines were junk. My young grandson is on his way over to pick apples in the orchard and I thought of this. Grandma's gone maybe time to put him in the tractor bucket to pick.

Probably wont help, most kids nowadays cant read    :D . Then again my wife filled up our Dodge with 30 gal of unleaded.......its a diesel truck. $600.00 later its back to running. She probably had her dam* Ipod on and listening to books on tape instead of paying attention to details.

My kids are smart, but if they can't do with a computer they are not interested. We were discussing the zombie apocalypse last night over dinner and they said if I turned my tractor into a zombie killdozer it would be cool. Other than that, they have no interest in tractors.

Good idea for the Grandpa's to do. And maybe carry it one more step and mark the cans for which tractors/engines the fuel is for. I've marked the mix for chainsaw, brush whacker, and leaf blower. Should mark the red can for the gator, splitter, 425 and X485. Then the yellow diesel fuel for the 4300 and the 455. Hadn't thought about it until now, but things could happen any day to "not be around".

Thanks---I feed the deer apples and pears I just do not like the bucks killing two trees a year. The deer eat all the apples few are picked. A few coons but most are gone. Past years we were very heavy with coons.

I have some old diesel fuel but to spray on the trunks and feeder roots may kill the trees.

Any other ideas.

I highlighted the Diesel on the yellow fuel can with black permanent ink.

years ago my mother filled our diesel tanks with gasoline and luckily my father caught the mistake AFTER the tank was full but not before the tractor was run long. just had to drain the tank and replace the filter.
My cousin's husband was traveling from Alabama to Florida and needed to fill his diesel truck. Instead of reading the pump, he went off the handle color to determine which was diesel... Well in Florida.... they don't have the same color diesel pump handles. Expensive mistake.

My wife started to put gas in a diesel tractor a year ago but thought it was wrong and called me. Turned out ok, but man, every tractor we had was diesel including the tiller! Only the lawn mower used gasoline.

I wrote: "Don't be a weasel, please used Diesel" by the filler cap...

What kind of fuel to put in would come in handy on cars.

I had a couple from France with a rental come ask me to help them at the gas station the other day.
I checked the fuel door, the dashboard fuel gauge. Nothing. There was no way to figure out what to put in the thing. Course no owner's manual in the glove box, either.
Went with "regular unless it states otherwise ".
That must be the rule these days.

With so many choices now (throw E85 into the mix in the heartland) despite nozzles being different sizes, everything really should be well labelled.

Europe is near 100% diesel cars and trucks using low sulfur fuel. Good thing you helped them they probably have never pumped gasoline.

My wife rang me at work one day to complain that our brand new $1000 lawn mower was smoking and running rough. I had no idea so told her to turn it off and I will check when I got home. Investigation at home (show me which can you filled the mower from dear) revealed she had been running our petrol lawn mower on diesel for about 1/2 an hour. Didn't seem to hurt it. Cleaned it out, put some petrol in and away it went. The dealer gave me some technical explanation about how a small 4 stroke petrol engine can actually run (poorly) on diesel but my eyes glazed over. Still hunting for a 65hp cab tractor to make hay :)

adding diesel to a gas tractor wont hurt it overall, just the oil issues. Youll be blowing some smoke for a bit till its burnt off. I remember years ago being told by a mechanic to add some diesel to my old audi...to help lube the innerds. He told me to do it once in a while, and i did. I put on over 250,000 miles on that car.

But doing the other way around by adding gas to a diesel could be a BIG issue. Diesel compresion on gas can cause an explosion (has happened on marine engines before) . Diesel engines rely on the oily fuel for proper operation. Oh, by the way, the 30 gallons of gas/oil garbage that they drained out of my wifes truck was taken home by the mechanic and used in his lawnmower. He asked me if he could have it, i said ok. He had no issues with using it.

My bet is the spark plugs would foul shut and the top of the pistons would carbon up if it were heavy 100% diesel. Mixed with gas 50/50 and with thin spring/fall/winter diesel fuel would be less harmful. The summer and winter diesel is different. In Michigan with the temp able to change fast many truckers have had "heavy summer diesel fuel" turn to jelly and not pump when the temp turns cold fast. That is why you add kerosene to thin it out so it will pump and burn. JD tractors can have the same problem. In the cold winter you want thin diesel.

fuseboxer I was discussing diesel fuel with my nephew and mentioned that the off road deisel that I had found was labeled high sulfur deisel and I did not want to buy it. He also stated that I was better off buying the "regular" pump diesel as they change to the winter blend and the off road does not.

i only said add some diesel to the tank..not run straight diesel. i doubt a gas engine would run at all with 100% diesel
