Oil & Fuel Diesel Engine operation

   / Diesel Engine operation #41
Bird,

This has been an interesting thread to read since some of my current concerns are with proper break in - in cold temperature operation.

Please refer to my questions re: moving this tractor from TX to Iowa if you can.

My question here is for those with factory temp guages on the dash - Where do your guage needles usually run? I have a 2910 and the needle sure doesn't come up very high at operating temps (outside air temp this past weekend was around 35 f).

Leef, even in very hot weather my temperature gauge normally won't get but about a fourth of the way up. In fact, if I'm brush hogging in July and the temperature gauge gets halfway up, I know it's time to stop and clean the screen and grill in front of the radiator.

Same with my Ford 1710. However, I did notice that the temperature gauge barely came off the peg during warm up. Fifteen minutes @ 1500 didn't warm it up, but it would warm when worked. I replaced the thermostat and now it works normally. I found the gasket was installed on the wrong side of the thermostat, which might have caused the problem, but a thermostat stuck open is the more likely explanation.

I don't think the thermostat is bad on my B2710; I think it's normal temperature is just that low on the factory gauge, because I've seen some other owners post the same information, and it will come up to that point whether I'm working it or just letting it run at fast idle, but like I said, the only time it gets up to halfway is if the grill is partially blocked with debris.

Bird: Sorry for the confusion. I wasn't thinking that your thermostat was bad. I intended to say that mine works the same way as you describe. However, with mine, the engine wouldn't warm much at a fast idle, and I thought the temperature should come up into the lower end of the operating range at idle. I changed the thermostat, and now the engine does warm up at a fast idle.
