Determining tractor value

I think I'm ready to take a leap INTO a cab tractor. The older I get the more appealing it is. The question is how do I determine a fair value for my current set-up to sell what I have.

2003 John Deere 4710 e-hydro, 460 Loader, 48 backhoe, 1000 hours all in good condition. Not sure if the pictures of everything new is still on this site or not..??..

Several methods:

Ask for a trade-in value at the local JD store, and figure it is worth 20-25% more than that. The dealer will try to make 15% on it profit and then he will probably figure 10% for running it through the shop, "free delivery" when he sells it and perhaps for putting a 30-60 day warranty on it.

Another option is to look at what they are new, and dial it back 30-40% or so. Let's say it was $30k new (arbitrary example) and it is in nice shape. If you asked $25k, folks would just buy a new one as the extra $5k would be worth it for 13 years newer, warranty, good financing, etc. Yet at $20k, that would get attention. At $15k, you would have a lineup of buyers at your door.

You have a desirable tractor, JD brand, great model and it is a TLB. You can't lose on that combo. I wish I had 100 used tractors like that on my lot.

Of course the advice above of looking for similar tractors is always appropriate.

Thanks Dave. I already made an appointment for my local dealer to come out Monday for an estimated trade-in value. He knows I will try to sell outright for more then he will pay. It is good to know how much % to add to that to get closer to a personal sale number.

My local Deere dealer came out and gave a trade-in appraisal. It was less then I would have liked but I think it is a fair trade-in. Did the paperwork and my new (used) tractor will be swapped with mine sometime Monday......Now I'm like that little kid at Christmas excited to get into a newer tractor.
