I'm looking for a used rotary mower, primary use will be brush clearing and maintaining "rough" property. My dealer has a used 503 in stock, looks to be in nice shape. I understand this is an obsolete model, can anyone tell me if it's one of the "standard", or "medium duty" mowers? (if they were using that terminology back then). For my use, I think I should be looking at the medium duty version.

Any info on when this model was last made, known issues or a fair price would be great as well.

Thanks in advance.

I have a buddy with an old 503 rotary cutter. IMHO it is a lighter duty cutter. It is built alot lighter than my MX5. IMHO its probably worth 500 dollars in excellent shape.

The 503 is light duty, 513 was light to medium, MX5 is medium duty.
If you are going to get in to rough conditions get something with a slip clutch, preferably the MX5.

Thanks for all the info guys. One of the other dealers in my area told me pretty much the same thing-the 503 is a pretty light duty mower. I'm keeping my eyes open for a used Alamo flail, hopefully will score one pretty soon.
