Deer season

I am in an area surrounded by wildlife. (Lower Laurentians)
Moose, deer, turkey, rabbit, bobcat, beaver, lynx, geese, ducks --you name it.
The only bait we need is our flower bed!
Deer simply love our hosta and routinely chomp them to the roots.
While I don't hunt anymore I sure like seeing all that wildlife in its habitat.
Downside is bear and coons sure like our trash and make a mess.

Most of our 75 neighbors refer to this place as paradise, (and we are but 1 hr from Montreal)!
Also being at the top of the watershed our lake water is pure spring fed (and we sure strive to keep it that way with our very active association).

They sure do look good on the wall. I've only shot one, and I had it done in a full mount.

My wife has taken three does, and they sure where tasty!!!!

Mr. 10 tried to brush himself in so he wouldn’t be seen. It’s 95 here today. Supposed to be 69 for the high Saturday. Hopefully my wife can shank him.

Great bucks. I had a ten point kind of like your last picture on my place a few years ago. He wasn't wide enough to be legal, so I just watched him a few times and hoped he would get bigger the next year. Shame that I never saw him again.

MY WORK IS DONE HERE! Planted this plot September 21st in the middle of a pretty hardcore drought/record heat situation. Clover, chickory and a strip of brassicas down the middle (Rapeseed, turnips and kale). The middle of the plot is doing great because I irrigated almost every day from the creek right next to the plot. The rest of it has now sprouted due to the recent rains and cooler weather. The forecast looks great for continued survival/thriving. I have been spreading corn this whole time to keep the pressure off the new sprouts and bring deer into the area. Now that I am done irrigating I have set up a bucket feeder with a timer on it to dispense about 1/2 pound of corn 2x/day to keep them interested and hopefully keep the grazing pressure down a bit. My plan is to let this area rest until I hunt it in a month or so. The camera has been showing a couple doe/fawn familes and a couple random does w/o fawns. Only one buck. I have a Spypoint Micro cellular camera in there to continue taking pics. This is my first food plot and I am excited to see where it is going to take me. I will continue to update.

I got my food plot in on Sunday. We haven't had any rain in a very long time, so I was waiting for some moisture to soften up the ground so I could disk it. Wednesday and Friday we had a little rain, and the soil was perfect for disking on Sunday. Two days later we got over an inch of rain, so I'm very happy about that. Opening day is the 2nd, so now it's a waiting game. Fortunately, they are coming in for the corn and the Black Magic.

If it's legal to bait where you live, nothing works better then Black Magic from what I've seen. Just spread it out over a 5ft x5ft area and let it soak into the ground. Watering it in is even better. After a few years I have a low area where the deer have licked away the soil, with a hole in the middle that might be a foot and a half deep. They go to the Black Magic before the corn and before eating anything planted in the food plot.

The pictures are from last week, before I disked it up. You can see the water where I've been spreading the Black Magic. In almost every picture, the deer go to the Black Magic first.

Are there any limits on your two buck tags there? We can shoot 4 deer here. 2 does, a spike and one buck that has to be wider then 13 inches. They call that Antler Restrictions, or AR. The does used to be limited to the 4 day Thanksgiving weekend, but starting this year, they have changed it to the first week of the season. We've never shot a doe, but might this year if we see one without any fawns. We really enjoy the meat and would like enough to last us a lot longer.
