decompression lever KAMA ts254

Interesting stuff on this topic. I have no idea what or where it is on my tractor. I have a hood latch knob, and the engine stop knob to the left of the steering column, a hole with nothing in it and the starter key to the right of the steering column. It's cold in North Idaho already and freezing most days in winter. Any idea where and how to hook it up?

Open your hood and look on the back side of the valve cover. The compression release mechanism on the Y385 engine is built into the valve cover and the linkage to activate it is connected to a lever and shaft comming out of the back of the valve cover, part #62 in the following link to Johns website.

The rest of the linkage on the Jinma I own consists of a pushrod connecting the lever on the valve cover to a lever and shaft that sticks out under the dashboard in front of my left shin. Mine has a handle angeled at about 45 degrees. you twist the handle clockwise to engage the compression release.

Absolutely. Don't know if this applies in your case, but a few models of Chinese tractor have simply had the decompression linkage and lever uninstalled - because it interfered with shuttle shift operation. Shade tree engineering in my book, because I consider engine decompression every bit as important as the convenience that accompanies a shuttle shift. A well engineered machine would have both.

Hooked it up today, it was quite simple to do. Any ideas what causes my shuttle shifter to pop back out of forward? Drops into reverse well, and stays put.

If your shuttle lever is hitting the dash, you may not be getting all the way into forward, the ball has to drop into a detent on the shift rail, that is, the bar that slides moving the fork which engages/disengages the gears. We modify the shuttle lever on every tractor we assemble. If this is not the case, you need to remove the shift lever and the cover and be sure all is well inside.

Even if it always hasn't been that way. Modify, by bending it so it doesn't hit the dash?

We remove the lever, heat with a torch and bend the last 4" back maybe 5 or 10 degrees. This prevents the lever from hitting the dash and leaves a bit of room for your knuckles too.
