deck vacuum

I remember reading on this site a few days ago that someone said that removing the side discharge chute from a CC mower deck interrupts the vacuum and reduces the grass lift from the blades. If that is the case, would a mulching plug improve the blade lift and improve the cut? I tried to search for the thread with no results.
