Hi all , I will be trading in my commercial walk behind mower with A 48" deck for A x485 2 wheel steer and A 3 bag 14 bushel power flow system. I have just under 2 acres of yard. My ? is what deck size should I get? The yard is not perfectly flat, it has some humps and bumps. The 48" on my walk behind worked well and didnt scalp. Should I take A chance on the 54" or stick with the 48" on the new mower ? Thanks Mike

I had a 54" deck for my 485 and a 62" deck on my 595. My Dad has a 48" deck on his 335. I can say the best cutting deck was the 54", but the other two are close. To me, there is not too much difference between the decks with regard to scalping, as they are really well-suspended. On on X, the 48" is pretty small, practically engulfed by the machine, so you would lose a bit of "trimmability". Also, they would not be as popular for resale, if you decided to do so in the future. I believe the 54" would be your best bet. Interestingly, I found that my 485 with that size would mow almost as fast as the larger 595 deck would, so you do not give up much in efficiency.

Thanks John, looks like its gonna be the 54" John if you dont mind I have A few more questions on the x485 /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Did you like the machine ? Was the quality good? Im also lookin at the x475 2 wheel steer.The three main differances ( I can see) in the two are: 1) 2 more horses 2) fuel injection vs carb 3) better seat on the x485. Are these extras on the 485 worth the money? Here are the prices on the two I got from the dealer:

The X485 will be more fuel efficient.
Also, I think the X485 comes with the hydraulic controls (front taps). Unsure if the X475 does. And the seat is very nice.
I heard the 62in deck can be a holler (loud) compared to the 54in.
Don't go with the 48 - too small ie does not extend beyond the width of the wheels much if any. (54/62 made with a heavier gauge metal vs the 48....)
The AWS is an great machine if you have the budget.

My new 62c decks came with the new sound dampener kit install on it. This kit cuts the sound down on the deck almost a 1/3 of what it was. My father in law has a 2 yr. old deck on a 2210 and it’s really loud. He's already checked with the dealer about ordering the kit for he's deck.

My initial thoughts are the deals you received are not unbelievable, but also not out of line either, based on my quick calculations. With regard to the two machines, the 485 is a good bit of an upgrade. While both are quite nice and share frame, etc., the fuel injected engine is more powerful, easier to start, a little quieter, and somewhat better on fuel. I think it would be worth the extra money to upgrade. With regard to how I liked mine, I did. I traded it on a 595 with a 62" deck, which I liked better, mainly because it was diesel and had 4wd. The X485 would have been a good machine for me for a long time had my property needs not changed. Even with RWD, it is a stout machine that has definite ground engagement capability, and mows nicely. I think you would be happy. One note: Kawasaki engines are noted for their power and engineering/reliability. One thing they are NOT noted for is their fuel efficiency. Having operated several of them, as a group they seem to get the worst fuel economy of any small V twin garden design. The fuel injection will offer a solid improvement in this area, but just know these particular engines are thirsty, even the fuelie. Good luck.

My walk behind has A kawasaki engine. I will be going to the dealers tomorow. I may even look at A differant model and get A snow blower as well. Any other model selections in the deere line-up you would suggest? Thank you Mike
