Decent used truck?

Any Vortec powered Chevy from 96 up. They have their issues but will keep running. I’ve had 3 at over 500k miles combined, no trans or engine issues.

Brake lines yes, fuel lines yes, exhaust work yes...

Not saying anything wrong with Ford or Dodge from that era.

Thank you for that info.

You might be better off repairing if the truck is otherwise in good shape.
I've had the truck for at least 15 years and have put about 180k it after buying it with 64k on it. To date, no big issues I can remember other than what I may be looking at. Drove it hard the first 5-8 years, then the mileage dropped on my end due to company vehicles.

At the end of the day, it's just nice to have a truck and do what you want to do out back. Nephew is coming over to shoot tomorrow, and it just dawned on me what the heck I am going to drive out back added where am I putting all the guns.

I'll be getting it towed to a transmission place at the end of this week to give me either the good news or bad news.

so you may be able to get by this time with a couple grand but what about next time? At what point do you tire of throwing money at it?
Last couple of years I've only been averaging perhaps 5-8k a year with the truck max. I figure for what I've been using it for, if I have to spend 3k to fix it and if I could get 3-5 more years out of it, it wouldn't be a bad investment.

Seems like the truck market is like the housing market right now. I don't like to buy if I don't have to when the market seems crazy which is kind of leaning me to repair right now.

Tough market.... Devil you know, I'd probably fix the Toy, and add a good Aux Trans Cooler, if not already present (automatic assumed).
At a minimum, the existing cooler needs to be properly flushed... many automatics kack from nothing more than a plugged cooler.

Not for many (might not pass with the wife, but many guys won't go this way either...), but I'd be looking at stripped (base option only, vinyl floor etc) utility trucks, 3/4 ton plus for a 3rd vehicle.

Plenty of power and space in that class, thirstier at pump. Too spartan for many today (helps lower the price).... you might actually have to adjust the Temperature dial on the HVAC yourself, instead of a Set/Forget temperature. Life is Hard in this product segment....
.

Rgds, D.
My wife could drive my 5 speed older previous toyota truck when I was dating her. My wife is a lot like me, if it gets us to point a to point b, it's generally fine.

Until we both retire and may be hauling a trailer, basic the better.

THIS is why craigslist reminds me of Armslist 🤣 As I've told my boys, if a deal seems to good to be true, it probably isn't. Just need to be more diligent.

Something tells me I'll be staying away from boobslot.com

Sigarms: You may consider adding the cars.com App to your phone or online. With this App, you can choose vehicles based on models, distance, price range and mileage. Then quickly building a file for review of potential choices for contact. The App will remember your favorites and then allows you to contact the seller for initial offers. The App also tells you if it's overpriced and the length of time it's been listed for sale. Recommend giving it a try to sort thru potential listing.

Here's my thoughts. Right now the truck is essentially worthless. If the rest of the truck is in good shape and the repairs cost less than the value of the truck then you are money ahead to repair. Btw my thoughts on the best repair for an automatic is a standard transmission but most people aren't into that.

A company I used to work for based replacement on the cost of repairs. If the cost in one year exceeded the cost of interest on a replacement then it was replaced.
