Decent used truck?

I'm looking too, but about a third of the OP's 15K budget.

I'd prefer something enclosed over an open bed. And with less 'puterized junk like TPS, key chips, etc.

Definitely a lot of great options out there but if you have the ability to hold out for a bit I would, the price of used trucks right now is pretty inflated due to the chip shortages for new trucks cutting into dealer inventory.

Please note, I mentioned "max" budget.

If I could find something decent for 5k, I'd jump on it for the uses around the house as we already 3 other vehicles. I just don't like to limit my search as you may find something a lot better for a couple grand more.

Question becomes how long do I expect to own the truck and what will it's intended purposes be 10 years from now.

I have a cap now on my truck, and for hauling stuff both for personal and work, found the cap to be a bigger pain to deal with.

After looking around last night with a search radius of 200 miles, that's what I'm finding per pricing.

At this point, even if I have to spend 3k for a transmission, may be the route to go and hopefully get another 5-10 years out of it until we don't need it around the house.

The toyota I've had for over 15 years, bought it used as well, but it's treated me very well.

Just to consider something different....

We just picked up a 2003 Suburban 1500 4x4 in Oklahoma last weekend. 167,000 miles. 5.3 liter engine. Leather interior. All the options, etc.... seats 6 very comfortably, 7 in a pinch, tows 7100#. 3rd row seat folds up towards the front for more rear cargo capacity, or removed completely for even more. 2nd row seats fold flat, leaving room for 4x8 sheets if needed. Has the rear ambulance style doors, which I like better than a tailgate. Rides very smooth. I was kinda shocked given the age. We got around 19mpg on the 815 mile trip home with speeds of 85-60mph.
Took a rental suburban years ago down to SC for work and I was surprised how much interior room it had and really liked the vehicle overall and how much room it had.

When the pilot gives up the ghost may look for a tahoe as I found a really good one couple of weeks ago used with only like 80k, but couldn't justify it because we don't really need it at this point.

Thing is, I still use my personal truck for work and still haul equipment with it where the truck bed is very useful.

800 miles for a used vehicle? You're a better man than
I 😁

And yes, after living in the North East for a good part of my life growing up, this year no road salt on the road due to lack of snow. Works wonders for the vehicles body.

Faced with a similar situation with our 08 Tahoe ($3,000+ to rebuild front axle), I found one in a wreck on EBay for $550. Installed it for a few hundred and got about 80,000 additional miles out of it.
You might be better off repairing if the truck is otherwise in good shape.
I thought you were looking for a change and your Toyota was shot.

Used prices are just stupid right now. I saw a crew cab 2016 F150 4x4 used, 97,000 miles, $34k. My truck is one year newer and I bought it brand new for just a little more than that. Are people paying that?

15k will get you something decent, maybe a little under 100,000 miles but probably older. If I had that budget I’d look for older trucks, say 15 years old, that had less miles but in better shape.

Tough market.... Devil you know, I'd probably fix the Toy, and add a good Aux Trans Cooler, if not already present (automatic assumed).
At a minimum, the existing cooler needs to be properly flushed... many automatics kack from nothing more than a plugged cooler.

Not for many (might not pass with the wife, but many guys won't go this way either...), but I'd be looking at stripped (base option only, vinyl floor etc) utility trucks, 3/4 ton plus for a 3rd vehicle.

Plenty of power and space in that class, thirstier at pump. Too spartan for many today (helps lower the price).... you might actually have to adjust the Temperature dial on the HVAC yourself, instead of a Set/Forget temperature. Life is Hard in this product segment....
.

If you want to buy a Southern Truck in order to avoid the rust on many (most?) Northern Trucks, you can have them hauled/shipped to you within a reasonable distance for $500, $600 depending on where you are and where you're picking it up.

It's worth looking into.

To be blunt with you, it might be time to say goodbye to the old T100. They were only made for a few years and that was over 2 decades ago, so parts aren't readily available. Especially on vehicles made in Japan. Plus, they weren't all that popular when they were made.

So you may be able to get by this time with a couple grand but what about next time? At what point do you tire of throwing money at it?

But used trucks are a bear. You can put an ad in the paper down here and have people knocking on your door at 4:00AM, when they get the paper, the next morning trying to buy it.

Trying to buy new is much, much worse right now. The biggest Ford Dealer on the Planet is near me and they usually have BIG discounts on their new trucks. They have none right now. I mean, they're asking, and getting, sticker price. Where last year, you could get $10,000 - $12,000 off sticker of an F-150 without even trying.

Like I said, I'm a Ford guy but I drive a Ram. Chevrolet went out of business for a reason, and Ram is so unknown to most people. Or at least they were when I bought my Cummins. Which is what I bought. Not a pickup truck, a Cummins.

But when it comes to used, about the only thing that matters is who had it before you and, of course, how much they want for it. Used? I'd probably lean Ram. And I'm not a Ram fan boy, at all. I'm a Ford guy. But people that buy Ford Pickups usually work them to death before they hit the used car lot. And the EcoBeast has had a few problems. Not as many as the Ford-Haters say, not even close, but a few. But used EcoBeasts are seriously expensive.

Wanna get blown out of your socks? Drive an EcoBoost.

But used, too many boy-racer types had them and I don't trust those kind of drivers.

For what you've described, I'd look at Ram. More bang for the buck, by far, than most chevys. And a better truck, IMO

I didn't want to name a brand, but I did. Here comes the flak :)
