Decent filter/separator for Compressor?

I have been using a harbor freight separator with a filter in it. Its starting to leak. I rarely use my plasma cutter and mostly use some air tools and media blaster the most. Just looking for a decent home diy'er water separator that doesn't break the bank. Thanks in advance.

Me too... the HF one that I use in front of my HF sandblaster is junky. Broke one and on my second. I need a bigger one that holds more desiccant too.

For my plasma I purchased a Motor Guard unit. Uses filters that resemble tp. Different models for various cfm requirements. Don't remember where I ordered from, shopped for the best deal. Was from the US though.

Usually quite a few sellers carry Motor Guard on eBay.

I bought a campbell hausfeld filter at tractor supply to set up my new 60 gallon compressor for the Hypertherm 30xp I got. It is supposed to filter to 5 micron. Lucked up and got it on sale for something like 15.00. Mine doesn't have a desiccant but they do make one with it. So far so good for my application.

Forger the separator or filter. Get a harbor freight refrigerated dryer. A few hundred bucks but removed close to 100% of moisture. My paper filter after the dryer is 8 + years old...not a drop of liquid. Before i got the dryer, i was constantly replacing the filter.

Sure, you had to throw a wrench into the gears. Could you please post a link to the specific HF dryer you are happy with? Did you have to mod it? Every 'expensive' HF thing I bought has required significant mods to enjoy... (blast cabinet, greenhouse, 20T press).

But it way alot cheaper 8 years ago. I have not done a thing to it. It worked right out of the box. Every so often i drain it, and cant believe all the water it traps

Plus one on the recommendation for buying a refrigerated air dryer.

Years ago I allowed my farm mechanic to build our own dryer using a trans cooler, truck air dryer and small storage tank.

It works flawlessly, and is wired and plumbed to eject collected moisture each time it cycles. While it has been trouble free and provides DRY air for over 10 years I truly believe I would have been further ahead spending a few dollars MORE for a manufactured dryer unit.

I bought this Atlas Copco new in the late 1970’s and the day it packs
It in my dryer investment will be nothing but a few used parts and fittings.

If I had a store bought dryer I would simply hook it up to the new compressor.



I rate this up there with one of my dumber moves.
