I'm on the long approach for a log splitter build. My BIL gave me one of these (used) PRINCE Cylinder,hyd,2 1'/'2 Bore x 16 In Stroke - Hydraulic Cylinder - 5Z366'|'PMC-5416 - Grainger Industrial Supply

The only problem i see with it is that it's previous life was on the bottom of a tilting trailer and it has a bevel ground into the body of the cylinder and the end of the rod from dragging on the ground. But it isn't leaking. My plan is to make a splitter that splits wood on both strokes. Is this gonna do it?

Thanks

This cylinder would be considered too small for most splitters. Tonnage would be between 5-7 tons depending on pump output.

IMO the rod is way to small as well,

I split with a 3x16 with a 1.25 rod all winter last year. Worked great for me, I mostly split oak. It split no problem. I didn't have any thing it wouldn't split, but I don't split anything longer than 18" and no wider than 24" usually. That's just my expierence though. I say go for it if your not splitting monsters.

4" bore will give you around 15.7 tons at 2,500 psi on the push stroke. The tonnage on the return would depend on the size of the ram. This is the size cylinder you will find on most of the "22" ton splitters being sold.

I would not go smaller than the 4'' bore. I missed out on buying a two way splitter that a man had made who worked on Hyster forklifts for a living. He knew what he was doing because he did this for a living. Ran the thing off a forklift also. They sold his pile of split firewood for over 900 dollars. He built it and used it.

Thanks for the replies. I kinda thought it might be on the small side. Might work for a log lift though...this is all in the future as I accumulate parts.
