death of regular cab pickups

guess it's all about current market demand: regular cab pickups are a thing of the past with limited availability. couldn't live without my regular long bed Toyota 4x4.

seems today everyone wants to bring their living room with them in a pickup (w/very little payload capacity). i'll stick with my farm work beast that is also very roadworthy. plus don't feel like taking a 2nd mortgage for today's luxury models. each to his own... best regards, bb

The attached article states that "...trucks had a top speed of 50 mph..."

My '64 F-100 with the 292ci V8 could do 70mph. Granted that was downhill with the pedal to the floor and the engine screaming. But she was geared low with a granny gear 4-speed. I wish I still had that truck, although I'd probably swap that motor out for a 289.

It must be hell of a sport driving it that thing at that speed ... I drove my buddy 1983 ford 250 and as soon as you get over 62 MPH and it start to be all over the place ... you have to drive like how Keanu Reeves drive his ford bronco in Speed lol ... 74 MPH was as fast as I wanted to push it

'65 and up was when they went to that twin I-beam front end. My '64 still had the old straight axel.

I have an F250 Super Duty crew cab long box and parking it is a problem at times. I feel that if you have a truck to actually haul things the 8ft bed is the way to go. When growing up on the farm we had a 1951 1 Ton SRW Chevy pickup that had a 9ft box, my dad could stack more bales of hay on that thing than any of these modern pickups. If you want something that can haul a lot and is maneveuverable get a cab over truck. My son has a 1965 C-700, he cut 4 feet off of the 18 foot box and now it is more maneuverable than my F250. I worked at an Isuzu, Ford HD, and Peterbuilt dealership, man those Isuzus could turn a tight radius.

so the steering was a lot stiffer and hold the road better ? I never driven anything that old.
My '97 F350 has a solid axle in the front; even with 35's on it, handling is fine at 75-80, but the fuel tanks start to leak noticeably above 70 so I usually keep it 65-70...

to be honest i was glad to see the solid ft axle give way to independent wishbone suspension prior to my model.. my '92 22re 4 cyl (fuel injection) imho was the most reliable rock solid engine/chassis Toyota built to date. never would i consider a new model. but it only applies i guess to my late life stage. have no prob at all w/new pickups these days, they serve the market well, will never own one... best regards

I have no use for independent suspension on the front of a 4wd truck.

One of the best riding/driving 4wd trucks in the 20yr old range is the leaf spring Super Duty. It might be superseded in the last 5 years, but I'd question that.

I sure miss my Ford 4.9 inline 4 speed manual long bed. Don’t need all the “$80,000 options” just my old truck.

My 1999 Ford F350 diesel Crew Cab Dually with an 8-foot box also has 4X4. A leaf spring front end does not turn well. A semi truck will turn a sharper corner than I can.
Someday I will trade it for a smaller truck. It does haul well and tow well though
I did own a 2005 crew cab Silverado 2500HD LLY diesel 8’ bed and what a beast!
