My D2050 has always started hard. It always requires lots of glow plug time, pumping the throttle, and lots of cranking, even in the summer. It cranks like it's laboring even with a full charged battery. I'm wondering if it could be a starter problem. The fuel filter is new and fuel flow seems okay. After it starts it runs okay and does not smoke. I have no manual so I don't know of any adjustments that might improve starting. I don't thing I should even need the glow plugs in summer - right? Any ideas?

You might want to try cleaning the starter contacts and grounds as corrosion can easily make for current losses especially when drawing starter heavy loads.
Unfasten the cables and clean/polish the mating surfaces of both battery terminals and grounds.
Since the starter is grounded to the engine loosen the mounting bolts and clean the mating surfaces.

a lot of time when the starter does this it is because the bushings in the starter is worn and causing a condition called poleing.this is when the armature of the starter touches the coil poles.the armature is the part that spins.check and clean all the connections first including the ground connections.if the problem continues have the starter rebuilt.A & T Parts & Rebuilders
