Boy, you have to love those firewood processors. I know a couple brothers in Vermont that do about 240 cords of wood a year, part time. Of course, with a processor like the one in the video. They run a sawmill full time. I couldn't do 240 cords in a year working fulltime with my saw and splitter.

Real nice - if you're lucky enough to live someplace with nice straight wood like that. Around here, we're stuck with knotty oak that we harvest when they fall down. They're typically 45+ inches around the base, and there's rarely more than a three foot length in the whole thing that's nice and straight.

Ugh. 48" twisted knotty oak. That sounds terrible. I am typing with hands that are blistered from last night's manual splitting episode that involved some smaller 30" evergreen rounds that were very knotty and often took two wedges to split. I am patiently waiting for my ordered hydraulic splitter to arrive.

These were used when we cut firewood into 4' logs and then split the logs and THEN cut that into 16" pieces. Before chain saws. That was when you cut only nice straight Red oak and Ash. bcs

That 8 way splitter ram looked great. Even if that machine cost $25,000 it would be a bargain for someone who split wood for a living.

WayneB, i was thinking that since we aren't all that far away from each other, and we both burn wood for heat...... perhaps we should go in together on one of those processors.



Of course........ by "going in together", i mean that if you buy it...... i'll come down and use it to process my firewood !!

There is a movement in Illinois to outlaw wood burning. So far it's just starting to get to the capital. Normally I would say it dosen't have a chance, but the begining of the year it became a smoking free state in any public space.

Tom we had one when I was a kid and ran it off from an old Farmal C. Tell you back then I wasn't permitted to use it, to dangerous and I wouldn't want to use one today either. Whole bunch of teeth to bite ya on those babies.

We had one when I was a kid and it scared me even then. Dad had us kids stand there and catch the pieces as they were cut. I hated the job.

Hiya,

On my Ford 600 that it runs on when my nutcase brother decides to come up and use it, there is a 90 degree drive unit that bolts to the lower part of the frame. It's at his house now cause the bearings got noisy last time he ran it and he's rebuilding it. (family rule, U break it, U fix it) I'll take some picts and post when it's all back together. (may not be till the summer though)

Are you really interested in finding another home for that saw? I have an old Simplicity walk behind tractor that my father bought used back in the late 1950's that has a smaller version of a cordwood saw attachment. I got the thing going last year, I reaaly like it for cutting smaller limb wood and such for the kitchen wood cook stove we have. That one has about a 20" diameter blade.

When I was a kid they were quite common. Most of the ones I saw ran off a belt from the tractor.

The neighbours would get together and go around cutting each persons winter supply of wood. This slowly fell out of practice with the advent of larger trucks and more use of coal. Prior to this it was a two day trip by horse and wagon for coal.
