Took a ride to tractor Supply today and as I was cruising with my cart saw some flapper valves. Wasn't sure what size to get but I bought a 1 1/4 inch. I was tired of the west wind trying to blow snow and rain into my 45 degree bend. Took a three wheel cutter and hacked it off right under the bend. I think a 1 1/2 flapper would have fit better but now I'm happy. Better than putting a pail over it. Sprayed it with black heat paint, fired her up, and the flapper jumped to attention as the exhaust was pushed through her. Shut her down, and the Flapper fell into the protection position. CLOSED Tight. I paid $5.95 for it. Now I have a piece of mind...

Looks good. I had one of them on my Yanmar too. But 1-1/4" is the inside diameter of the clamp portion. You would likely have had difficulty tightening a 1-1/2" flapper without modification. Plus, the counterweight would be heavier, might not open as far at idle.

Condensation occurs inside the exhaust system as a normal part of the cooldown process, usually evaporating out the open pipe. So one downside to this device is that it will inhibit that evaporation process, inviting rust from the inside out. To compensate, my Yanmar had a little weep hole at the lowest point of the 90 degree exhaust elbow

I installed a flapper on mine too. To get around the possible condensation problem I installed it so the clamping strap was 1/16" above the end of the exhaust pipe. That left a small gap maybe a 1/2" x 1/16" where the clamp bolt is. That way it can get a little air during cool down. Works great!

An amount from condesation is sure better than a gallon from a rainstorm with no bucket over it.....Cheap insurance and not remembering to have to cover it when left outside in a rainstorm.. Not a big deal but an improvement.... Weep hole is a good idea but I'd hate to get some metal shavings in there from drilling...

Take a look first John. Some of the Y380/385 exhaust elbows came with a weep hole already drilled (or cast)

Next time I go out there I'll take a peek. Have to put the magnifiers on for the closeup............

The camera did the trick. Much easier to see in a picture than trying to crawl under. Sure enough..... A Weep Hole........

Nope, no weep hole in mine. I'm not sure about the fit of the Koyker loader, but my exhaust pipe is not the original in order to make more clearance between it and the loader arm. That weep hole could also prevent water from filling the cylinder with the open valve in a really nasty rain if it weren't covered. Since I don't store mine outside I'll skip on the weep hole for now, but it's a good feature. If I ever take off the lower portion of the exhaust I'll put the weeper in.

Living in N.C. and keeping the tractor inside. I wouldn't be too concerned about the weep hole either. Good insurance though to have one....Time permitting.
