Check this chainsaw attachment out. I have thought about it a few times over the years. I thought that I would wind up breaking a blade. That is why I haven't tried to make one. Can't see how you could keep from messing up your chainsaw. I would like to see one actually work.

IMO, it is really hard to read the stress and twist of a limb on a tree, and figuring out which is the heavy side. That being the case, seems this saw would be pinched and stuck a lot, and getting it wrenched loose when its rigid on the end of that pole seems difficult, at best. If there was a way to put pressure on the limb being sawed off, those stresses may be overcome. But there isn't.
Still, may be better and less expensive than an alternative.
I have a pole chain saw, and that is too often frustrating to read the twist in the limb being sawed. And un-sticking it is not easy without lifting up on the limb a bit.
Appreciate the post and heads-up though. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

My thoughts exactly.

I have a telescoping pruner saw. It has a small gas powered chain saw on the end. Cost about $600, made by Robin. Stihl makes them too. I've pruned tons of limbs with it. Sometimes I work out of the bucket to get more height.

I also have a pole chain saw that I have used a LOT. I have found that making an undercut maybe a third thru the limb before going over the top and cutting down, I almost never have a problem pinching the chain. Also makes a much cleaner cut with no tearing on the bottom side.

Looks interesting Jerry but I have to wonder myself just how practical it might work out in the field. My thoughts are that it would end up being jammed quite a bit.

I have a low-tech chain saw for limbs -- I think I got it from Northern. Its a long (maybe four feet) piece of toothed chain with ropes on each end. You throw it over the limb and then pull it back and forth. Once you get the right side down and working, it is amazingly efficient. A bit of muscle is needed because you're always working with your arms in the air, but for occaisional use, it is a great invention.

I've seen the line cleaning guys use air powered saws. That always looked like a good deal to me--and you wouldn't have to worry about your saw stalling or running out of gas when it was 20 ft up in a tree. But I've never seen any like these for sale. To me, the handle could be as easy as adding a new length of black pipe to feed the air & support the motor.

Anyone else seen these?

I have the Stihl pole saw and it works great. I don't see how anyone could avoid breaking the chain saw trying to cut with the FEL. THink about trying to change from cutting on the left side to the right side.

Nice thought but really not too practical......

I've wondered if anyone made a hydraulic version of a basic hand held lopper that could attach to a FEL bucket. It could be much larger than a hand held, but it still probably wouldn't be able to cut much more than 2-4" branches/sapplings, but it would still be handy for controlled cutting. It would be even better if it could rotate from a horizontal to vertical cut.

Went to the scrap yard yesterday for some steel and saw a Bob Cat with a heavy duty shear on the front for cutting metal. I had visions of getting something like that, only a smaller version, for doing some heavy duty tree pruning. You might try to find one on the Internet and get some plan ideas. Not sure what orchards use, check out orchard supply houses, they might have one like you are thinking about.

Hy Reach Clipper

I've seen bigger ones for large skid steers but this one is the biggest I'd want on a tractor without some kind of safety cage.

Thats it! Wow, that is great. But I agree, it will cut an 8" tree and an 8" tree is big enough to dent your tractor.....and your head. But it would certainly beat crawling around on the ground with a chainsaw in hand. I spent a good part of last weekend doing that in order to widen my roads. To get the stump low enough so the mower will clear it you have to be on your knees, what a pain.

I've got about 4 acres of young pines I'd like to clear and that device would be great. However, I bet it cost a $2k. Then you need a brush rake or a grapple, then you got to get the bigger stupms out of the ground. When you add all that up you could pay a guy with a dozer to do it all...which I think is what I'll end up doing.

But I've got to say, that is a cool tool. I couldn't get their site to work properly for me, any idea what the actual price is?

I've seen some of these where they have a push bar above the cutter that directs the tree away from the machine, but this wouldn't work with an in the air cutter. If you were cutting trees level with the ground it would be much safer though.

I too have a pole chainsaw. It works great. Thing is we have instant control of when to pull out or change from top to bottom as needed. Trying that with a saw hooked to a bucket going full blast and taking the chance that if it kicked back over the bucket--- well I can see the picture now.

Looks like almost everyones opinion is the same as mine or real close. I can't see how it would work, but you can sell anything. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Do not berate That Tool. It will make chainsaw dealers " VERY HAPPY "

Figure maybe one cut per saw.
