My wife was mowing the lawn and all of a sudden the tractor just stopped. The engine was still running fine, but the tractor just stopped. After looking at it, I noticed the belt from the engine to the transmission had slipped off the pulley and the fan that was on top of the pulley was sheered off and sitting on the back of the deck.

I bought a replacement belt (assuming it had stretched since it fell off the pulley) and a replacement fan, but when I try to unscrew the bolt holding the fan on, the pulley just keeps turning, no matter which direction I turn. I'm sure it's something stupid, but how do I take the fan base off without turning the pulley?

Thanks.

Vince

After looking at other posts and finding the parts manual online, it looks like it's the hydro fan that sits on top of the tranny. I'm still stumped on how to replace it though.

I was able to replace the fan with the help of 2 other people. Two to hold the belt and keep it from turning and the third to loosen the nut.

Is this a Cub Cadet GT 1554 or SLT 1554?

If so, you are in for a real treat.

To replace the fan I dropped the transaxle & used an electric impact wrench to remove the fan/pulley nut.

To replace the fan/pulley/belt/nut I used a hole saw to cut a 2 1/2" diameter hole under the seat to use the same impact wrench on a flex extension to tighten the nut. This was after the transaxle was bolted up to the chassis.

That was the easy part. On the models I just refered to you must R&R the PTO & then remove the engine mount bolts to shift the engine enough to get the belt onto the pulley.

My PTO did not want to slip off the crankshaft & I did not want to try using some sort of puller on it. I removed the engine mount bolts, bumper & muffler, then stood the tractor up, left the PTO in place & used a disc on a die grinder to remove the metal tabs @ the front & sides of the pulley. These tabs prevent shifting the engine far enough to slip the belt between the PTO & steering sector.

Once you get the belt snaked under the steering sector & onto the pulley, secure the engine mount bolts before slipping the belt over the idler puley. Replace the muffler & bumper & you are done. Easy as pie. :smiley_aafz:

Have fun.

ok people
I am not positive but
I dont think the nut has to come off
I cut what was left of the plastic fan off
and after looking at it closely
I think it just snaps on the washer with the 3 notches in it
I wont know for sure until my new fan comes in , in 3 days but
someone correct me if I am wrong
