I stumbled on to a great find: a Cub Cadet 128, 12 horses, built by International Harvester ca. 1973-74, in adequate running condition, for $50!

It has a problem turning right (abnormally wide turn radius) but left turns are normal.

Also, the engine smokes a little when you first fire the machine up.

Also the mower does not work, which is why I got it so cheap, but to tell you the truth, I plan on removing the mower deck anyway. My wife wants the Cub for its pulling capacity, not its mowing abilities.

Other than that, it is actually in good running shape.

Now here's my question.

I found a website that can sell me reprints of the Operators and Service Manuals for this tractor. Problem is, there were three different service manuals put out for the Cub Cadet 128, and you have to know the serial number of the tractor to know which service manual to purchase. At thirty bucks a pop, I don't want to have to purchase all three of them, just to get the service manual I need for my tractor.

I looked and couldn't find the serial number on this machine.

Do any of you have any idea where the serial number might be hidden on the Cub?

Also, if you have any ideas or suggestions on how to restore this Cub, I'd love to hear from you.

My wife is all excited about this find -- she wants me to restore it, and then she wants to enter it into garden tractor pulls.

I've got a 129 w/mower deck, roto-tiller and sprayer. I really love that hydro drive. I've replaced the spindles on the desk. These older machines are built rock tough and have great traction.

Good luck with your cub /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

We had a 128 for many years. It spoiled most newer lawn or garden tractors for me. What a tough machine. We did things and cut things (48" deck if I recall) that no 12hp machine had a right to try (at least by today's standards). Post some photos of your restore efforts and progress when you get a chance. Good luck!

Serial # plate if Your 128 still has one is on the left side of the rearend cover on the back of the tractor. Silver tag about 1" wide X 2-3" long.

Congratulations on a GREAT deal!!! I'd jump on every $50 one of those I could find!
