I've got some cracked and leaking washers on a couple banjo bolts (on the diverter valve). OEM is rubber, is it better to keep them rubber, or would copper or aluminum be an improvement?

If it's made for a rubber o-ring then rubber, if you can get a copper crush washer on it go copper.

The replacement part I found is a washer, which leads me to believe it's not meant to use an o-ring.

If you look closely you'll see that the neoprene washers are steel reinforced. You can replace them with new of like kind or use copper. Aluminum is ok, put copper is preferred. If there is a recess in the banjo fitting then you have to use an O-ring.

I would use rubber and be sure not to overtighten.
