Crown fell off tooth

I would never do this but.....a close friend had a crown fall off one of his back molars. Crown was probably 35-40 years old, the old fashioned ones....gold.

The crown went back on perfectly and.....he said.....it felt normal so he decided to super glue it back on.

That didn't work and after doing some research, he found it is not wise to use super glue.

He searched and found nothing but temporary solutions that seemed to focus more on pain that adhesion. He had zero pain.

He found this product. The official description would scare a person a little but after reading the many positive reviews posted by....normal people....he decided to try it.

He said it's been 4-5 days with normal chomping and...so far so good.

He got it online, about $15, probably a life time supply.

The above all according to a friend.

One should be able to purchase the same glue Dentists use. There are numerous brands.

Decay could be the reason it came off, it can happen without pain present. Why not have a dentist do it correctly?

I stuck a temporary crown back on with an adhesive I got at the drug store.

This brings up a good point about keeping a dental first aid kit handy. I added one of these to the medical/trauma/survival kit I keep in my truck.

A tooth crown isn't a DIY project. Your friend should visit a dentist. I had a crown installed by a dentist 12 years ago and no problems so far. Their glue (or whatever it is?) is amazing.

I agree, strong stuff. The only way to get the crown off (porcelain) is to destroy it by crunching it with pliers. Terrible sound. Dentist only for me. $1200 ouch.

Around here some dentists and optometrist work extra hours Monday through Thursday and close Friday through Sunday. This is a very unsatisfactory situation for someone with a toothache or metal in the eye and I changed eye doctors because of it. As for my dentist, he told me to get a product called Dentemp to stick crowns back on until he could do it right.

I've always gone back to the dentist to make sure the tooth underneath wasn't damaged or rotting before he glued the cap back on. Pretty reasonable price, too.

A crown without a root canal is a waste of money. No nerve = no pain. Good dental insurance, pull it and get an impant

Probably why it came off. About 30 years ago I slipped on some rocks and broke the fall with my chin (ouch!). When I came to, I had 2 broken molars. By the time I got back home to visit the dentist, it was late in the day. He did a couple "temporary" crowns using filling material. He warned me they'd need to be replaced eventually, but I got almost 20 years out of them before they kind of crumbled and had to be replaced. A third crown has been in place since the mid 80s with no issues.

No root canal with any of my crowns, no issues with them (except as noted above).
I've found that dental insurance is kind of a waste of money. Most of the time it doesn't cover much beyond cleaning, X-rays and maybe a filling and the cost for the insurance is almost as much as the procedures it covers. Unless you have a much more generous plan than any I ever had.

I agree. I have a cracked tooth that requires a crown. The insurance declined and the dentist resubmitted with additional information and evidence. It was declined again.

I'm not sure what dental insurance covers, but it appears it doesn't cover much more than what you noted.

I have several crowns from years of contact sports and when I found dental implants I thought they were a game changer. Vastly superior to caps & crowns. I have to save up for them and they are a process to get done.

My last one was due to peanut brittle, it sucks being old, sometimes.

When I was working I had dental insurance I paid for every month. Found out that the dentist's price was the same with and without insurance so I was paying extra for insurance which didn't limit my costs. I dropped the insurance and paid the dentist directly and saved money. May not be the case for everyone or in a different location.
