I have a 1978 log splitter with a cross valve, BYD single leaver. I have been using hydraulic fluid but wish to change to transmission fluid, which is the same that I use in my Western Pro Plow Isarmatic cable motor. Is it possible to mix fluids or must I drain the current system? My second question is the action of the pump... to the left actuates the ram; center is neutral and to the right returns the ram. When the lever is pushed to the left it (most of the time) will hang and allow the ram to return and then pop to the neutral position. This does not always happen and can be frustrating as I turn to place another log on the ram bed. Does anyone have an opinion as to this cross unit? Is this common or does it need to be repaired, maybe a seal kit or?
