I was really pleased with the way my other gate turned out with the rails attached to it, so I did the same thing with this one.

The gate came with those standard hinges that thread into a wood post. I replaced them with threaded ones used to bolt to a metal post.

To support the gate, I used 5 inch metal tubing. I cut a hole in it for the hinge to go through, then welded one of the nuts to the tubing.

Then it was real simple to thread the hinge into the post and lock it into place with the other nut.

On the other post to secure the gate with a latch, I cut a piece of angle iron and slid it into the vinyl post. Then I set it in concrete and filled the post with concrete also.

I will come back later and drill into the angle iron to mount the latch after everything dries.

Here I am filling the ends of the rails with expanding foam. I figured that some wasp or other annoying critter will make a nest there if I leave it open.

After it dries, I'll cut if flush and paint it white when I do my touch up painting on the metal post and lights.

Dargo,
There are vinyl gates, depending on the style you want, that already contain aluminum inserts.
Aluminum post inserts are also available for gate posts. They look like an H, this allows inserts into the post.

Eddie Walker,
Nice looking job. I am currently doing the exact same job on my farm. I wanted a maintenance free, or as close to maintenance free as I could get, fence and gate system. After a lengthy investigation into vinyl gates I fabricated my own. I used 2"*5" aluminum tubing. I built them with the same dimensions as the 3 rail fence. I used 5"*5" aluminum box tubing for posts. I had everything powder coated to match the fence. When you look out into the pasture you can not tell where a gate is, it looks like continuous fence. The gates are super strong and are as close to maintenance free as I could build. For hardware, after an even longer investigation, I made the gates cantilevered rolling. I used a track system for commercial gates. It consists of trolleys mounted to the posts that the track rides in. The rolling gate solved a huge amount of issues. The gate rolls back onto the fence line so there are no space issues. Rolling terrain did not matter. Worrying about the swing of the gate was eliminated. We all know the weakest part of the gate system is the post, this eliminated that problem. For fasteners I used stainless. For the latch I used a Sure Latch, made from stainless. As you can tell no, or very low, maintenance was the goal, I think Iam almost there.

( I grew up with black widows while playing in juniper bushes and never had a fear of them. I'm not a fan of spiders, nor do I like them, but I can get along with them I guess.

Now snakes are a whole different story. I saw a copperhead come out of an old stump while on the dozer last weak, and it terrified me. It will be allong time until I can walk in that area and not be on the lookout for it, even though I killed it with the blade and ground it up with the tracks, I'm still worried there are more. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

)

Yep I can remember carrying a Black widow around on the end of a stick when I was a kid. I have since seen things on The Discovery Channel about how sick a Widow bite can make you and how much time in the hospital you can spend.

I have a terrible time with them in my watermelon patch in the summer. They get in the grass and weeds inder the melons and when I turn the melons to prevent them from rotting I find a Black Widow under almost every melon.

Sorry to get off topic.

That is a really nice project you have going on there. I wish I lived closer so I could travel down and see the RV park when it is complete. But for now I guess pictures will just have to do. If everything comes out as nice as what you have done so far I am sure you will be packed with guests and they will love your Campground. Good luck on any futer projects

Came across your project and it took about 1/2 hour to go through all of the posts. What a great job...love the creativity of the star light post. You should be proud of your efforts.

Looking forward to future TBN posts.

It's been cold and wet out, so to keep busy, I started building another street light for my entrance. The pipe is 4 inch galvanized. The post is 5 inch square tubing. The reason for those sizes is that my fence is white vinyl and the posts are 5 inches. I want the lights to blend with the fence and look like it all belongs together.

The first picture shows my gravel drive back in November. It's really a picture of the fall colors, but it gives an idea of the fence.

The other pictures show it as I painted it.

It was too windy yesterday to set the light, but today was perfect.

Nothing very interesting, just dug a hole, put the light in it, got it plumb and dumped a bunch of sacks of Readi Mix into the hole. I'll leave it sit overnight and then unstrap it from the backhoe.

got a name on your sign out front yet?

The name will be Wild Kingdom RV Park, but when that goes up, it changes my status from a farm to commercial property. When that happens, all the rules change. As long as the sign remains unfinished, I'm free to do as I please with my "farm."

so now that the pond is done, how long untill the RV park is ready?

/ Creating an Entrance #179
Eddie:

In that third picture, the light post looks to be not parallel to the utility poles.

Are they really off that much, or was the picture taken before you had it plumb?

/ Creating an Entrance #180
Eddie, the light looks great. With your fence being vinyl did you ever think of powder coating the posts. I don't think it would cost much more than $40 or $50 a post and it would last a lot longer. With it being 2 tone maybe a little more. Just a thought.
