On point the first is the hardest they will teach the young. Wolves are whole different thing few if any single dog would match up, Caucasian Shepard might do ok. Black bears will mostly intimidate, brown bear no chance. If wolves are a problem you need a pack to guard against one or two. A full wolf pack is force of nature, and lethal backup is a must. The dogs will at least warn you and give you a chance.

In the 1960's we ran 6 to 8 bands of sheep in the national forest, our great pyrenees were no match for the wolves. Not even a contest, I can still remember the vicious ripping of flesh on one of our best dogs.

There have been rumors of cougars around here in west central Illinois. I’d think someone would have got a picture of one by now between game cameras and cell phones.

I wouldn't be surprise that there is some in Illinois, they are very hard to see, their territory is huge maybe they don't breed there but passing by is certainly possible. In Ontario we are getting more and more evidence of cougars (trail cam pictures), for ever they said it was instinct in Ontario but many believe (among my grand father) that they where never completely instinct. Still they say they don't breed here they are only passing by, I find that hard to believe due to the size of Ontario.

We DO have cougars around here. Brownie and I don't venture out beyond the influence of the yard light at night.

I wouldn't mind seeing one but I'd sure want to be in the house. Looking out into the yard.

Many years ago I got two blue healers. Given to me from a friend who with his wife was moving back to the Philippines. Together those two dogs would hunt and kill coyotes.

Just like a cat will play with a mouse - before it is killed. Those two would drag a wounded coyote into the yard. Grab, bite, drag, - it's was a frightening thing to hear in my yard - late at night.

There must have been something in their past that led to this kind of activity.

I had a Blue Heeler and German Shepherd until the Heeler died at 17. The Heeler was half the size of the Shepherd but he could take down my Shepherd and my Shepherd knew to avoid any conflicts with the Heeler.

Now it's only Brownie and me out here. Brownie - 4 YO Cocker Spaniel.

Brownie NEVER goes outside by himself. He knows coyotes and turkeys. However - he is Hell on grasshoppers and butterflies.
