I just read an article about a couple of brothers here in Tennessee. Seems they rented a U-Haul truck and drove to a bunch of Dollar Stores in TN and KY, buying up all the hand sanitiser they could find, then listed it for sale on Amazon at obscene mark-up. Good for Amazon for shutting them down for price gouging. One of the two stated that they were performing a "service", but what they were really doing was making it hard for some poor schmuck to buy hand sanitiser locally, then offering it back at an inflated price. Kind of makes me understand why so many young folks are disillusioned with capitalism.

I wonder if that would work? Someone said earlier, wouldn't it be nice if people just bought what they needed, and didn't hoard. That does't seem to be the American way. In all sincerity, I wonder if the hoarders understand the impact on others, or care? Must be a Sunday School lesson in there somewhere...

I find that the fastest way to learn a lot about a person, system, or society, is to put it under stress.

As Jocko Willink put it (as a balanced, in-context comment during a JRE interview), one difference with modern military conflicts is that civilians back home could ".... still drive to the mall in a big air-conditioned SUV, and buy whatever they want".

As opposed to the Greatest Generation, we are now mostly comprised of people who have never dealt with material shortages in N. America.

My mother was a child during WWII, but old enough to understand what was going on. Talking with her and other people who lived at that time, and reading general accounts of the era, there was much more a sense of We Are All in This Together.

I know enough about people and history to realize that feeling wasn't absolute, and that profiteering has gone on in every war since the dawn of time....... but this era definitely does not have the same level of social cohesion as then.

I hope the CRA (our IRS) keeps track of these people, and hits them hard....

Never drank stereo. When I was little, my mom told me about some relatives of ours that did. She mentioned blindness and death from drinking alcohol. Fast forward 10 years and I woke up drunk on the floor in our bathroom after a long night of partying and couldn't see a thing. Finally realized my eyes were closed and I didn't have enough strength to open my eyes. Felt like they were sewn shut. Finally got one of them open and all I could see was dark patches flittering around everywhere. Mom's words came back to haunt me... I'd drunk myself blind! Oh man, I started having regrets! Had trouble getting up off the floor. I couldn't pick my head up. Felt around for the sink, pulled my way up, and splashed water on my face and eyes. Crying away that I'd ruined my life.

Finally figured out I'd thrown up in my sleep, the vomit had sealed my eyes shut and glued my hair to the floor when it dried every time the furnace came on and blew across me laying on the floor. The spots flying around in my vision was light coming through the leaves outside the window.

I'm lucky I didn't aspirate on my own vomit and die. That's when I realized I had a drinking problem and started working to resolve it. ;) Took a while, but worked out for me. Been 35ish years since then. I enjoy a beer with dinner now. Maybe two on a wild night. :drink:
Moss,
Thanks for the peek into your past, it takes a lot to let the world see some of the things we regret doing when we were younger...

Wonder how many people die from smoking related illnesses?
Yet the government is more than happy to tax these products and keep them legal.
On top of that, people with compromised lungs from smoking are more subject to hospitalization or death from this very virus

Learning from past mistakes.... high-value (well-corrected Moss ).

Some of what has been put in-place in Canada was learned during the SARS outbreaks here. As the article I just posted (and others) details in #'s, -19 has notable differences from SARS.

Few medical systems will be able to handle this crisis easily, given the potential for high case loads. Ventilators are one significant gating factor.

All about revenue, just like the tax on booze, gasoline and everything else you consume. Gotta support the gummit, you know, all those highly paid politicians that decide what's best for you.... The American way bud, live the dream.

Don't use the stuff. I use good old conventional soap and hot water. In my case a bar of Lava as my mitts are usually dirty anyway.

Maybe someone needs to shut down the Stock Traders.

Wow Corona Virus #4 still going I figured it would have got locked by now again......:)

Don't hold your breath, you might faint............:D

I'm sure one of the 'politically motivated' posters will stop in and ruin it shortly. If the moderators (I know a few) would just 'prune' the comments instead of locking the entire thread, would be nice, but then being a referee on a forum is an unpaid position, I can understand the motivation for just locking a thread. Who wants to 'prune' when you can 'chainsaw' the whole thing.

Pruning takes time, 'chainsawing' is instant...

Think this thread should be left in the hands (pruning) of the moderator who is commenting on it right now. He seems to have a handle on it pretty well..... hint, hint.....

All this hoarding talk just reminded me I had this. Bring on the apocalypse, I'm good. After all it's only 58 years old, gotta still be good.....

I dug one of their companion parts out of an old building years ago. The sk-IV sanitation kit. I was going to make it into a chair with wheels. They are normally about 30 bucks on e-bay. Took a look just now, more than double.

On a related note, my neighbor tells me there was an argument at the grocery store, someone got within 6 feet of another, and was getting cussed out.
Maybe we should all be taking an extra step back anyway. Sadly, I could see this being more than just an argument in another week.

Thanks. I finally asked myself "Is this the example you want to give for your future wife and possibly children?" Finally I heard that little BOINGOINGOING! noise in my head and I had the answer. That was about 35 years ago. Best choice I ever made.

Kind of surprised that hasn't happened. Guess it's the 'free enterprise' system hard at work, but ten, if the government did that, all those fancy dressed 'wall street bozo's' would be unemployed. Might not be a bad idea though. A forced vacation. Might save everyone's retirement too (dread the thought).
