No offense to any church goers but the shared communion cup is a bad practice to start with. I would avoid it at all costs. Yuck. Even if they wipe the cup with a germ laden cloth and smear the germs around.

Another bad practice is for the pastor to put the wafer in the person’s mouth instead in their hand. There will always be a few that lean forward and their lips touch the pastor’s hand.

That was my point to the wife . . . I'm not a devote anything, I do believe!

I am too, but some of the religious rituals are not too smart. Another example would be the shrine over in Iran that the faithful go over to and lick. Apparently the government put a stop to that about a week ago.

Yep... and that ain't the hand of Jesus, either... :D

The whole practice needs to be something that gets forgotten.

In times of illness like this, like when the flu is rampant, the Catholic church has, for the last couple decades, recommended priests to cease giving communion to the tongue, only give it to the hands of the recipient, suspend the practice of sharing the cup, no shaking hands at the sign of peace, no holding hands during the Our Father, and some have suspended the use of the holy water fonts at the entrance to church.

Heck, I remember that happening when I was an alter boy 50 years ago.

The archdioceses may have recommended that they abstain but I can tell you that it did not pass down to every church, certainly not to the ones I went to. I stopped going when all the pedophila started coming out in the news as I lost respect for the Church. So maybe in the last 10 years or so they have stopped. 50 years ago they did not even have the sign of peace handshake where I grew up. We must have been behind the times.

If I do not go to the store and the like, I do not need hand sanitizer :D
