Corn on the Cob Anyone?

I do wonder how much of the feed corn crop will be used to produce fuel and what will happen to the prices for both corn and fuel as a result of the increased production. Your post makes me wonder about the cost to grow both types of corn.

Combine that with the drop in gasoline usage being reported there could be a big surplus of ethanol. Which has little to do with shucking corn

Wanted to say I did the microwave trick worked great, and the last time we had a huge cook out I made cooler corn. I love this thread its great!

This may be due to the fact that my grandfather, father, and I had a ritual of seeing who could eat the most and leave the cleanest cobs.

Grew up with three brothers and we would do the same thing! My personal best was 12 ears and I wasn't the winner! :licking:

I guess it was closer to July 4th last year, but we bought corn at $0.10 an ear.

Bird, I bought corn at 3/$1 at our local Walmart a few weeks back. Kathy bought 6/$1 the last time she was there and I think she told me that they've already gone to 10/$1 last week. I've bought better corn at the Target where my grandson used to work, but if you feel this corn at Walmart, you can make sure you get all good full ears. It's the corn with the mixed yellow/white kernels and I don't know what's the proper name for it except "good" when microwaved and rolled in butter. Even with full dentures, I LOVE me some corn on the cob.:licking:

Edit: When we were kids, we'd eat all the corn off the cob and then suck all the "juice" out of the cob. I don't do that anymore unless nobody is watchin'.:laughing:

Obviously the same kind of corn at our Walmarts, Jim, and what we bought was very good. I'm glad to hear the price is coming down.

All the corn I've seen was still 33 to 40 cents an ear until yesterday. I bought 6 ears at the Highland Village Walmart for 25 cent each. Then later yesterday, the postman brought the sales brochures (junk mail) we get every week, and Kroger had an ad for 6 for a dollar. And my wife says she saw something recently on the TV news about corn prices going up.

I'll be checking our Walmart this weekend in preparation for July 4th. I think the prices vary widely at our store depending on how much corn they have and how it is selling. It may have gone back up in price.

The best deal I ever had on corn was when my grandson worked at a Super Target three years ago. They had corn for $0.10 per ear and 50 ears maximum. It turns out that 50 ears was a whole case/crate. I bought one and my grandson bought one. We had 100 ears of great corn and spent only $5 each.

Not to hijack the thread, but there's a local fruit stand that sells their own produce. My wife saw the guy driving out of his peach orchard with a load of peaches and stopped in to see if they had any for sale. They were $25 per half-bushel, so my wife bought 1/2 bu just to have some and help them out. I took one look at them and told her she had been robbed. I didn't want to press it, but they were the sorriest peaches on the planet. Half of them were just a bit bigger than a golf ball and mushy. I couldn't believe she actually paid for them. I don't think they ever thinned their peaches nor culled them before putting them out for sale. In a couple of weeks, we'll head down to Weatherford just after the Parker County Peach Festival and buy some good peaches. Theirs are always big, pretty, and tasty.:licking:

That's a bunch better than our local IGA that has corn at 3 ears for $2.

I don't know that we'll get any sweet corn worth eating in Indiana this year. Bad drought for us. We've had a 1/2" in June, normal is in the 6-8 range. The best corn around looks bad. Lots of brown fields, just as it's all coming into pollination. Record temps this week, we had 106 yesterday. My garden is in bad shape all around.

I just seeded our second sweet corn crop a week ago I put the first one in March 25 and though its not a big garden we still got 200+ lbs out of $27 worth of seed. Dont know what that works out to with water costs and fuel etc and all but we will have plenty of sweet corn this winter that will be nice.

Ouch by my math using that market price JD if my ears were 8oz that 200 lbs I harvested would be $76 @ .19 x 400 ears then figure in cost of operations I probably didn't save much $ but it is still a fun hobby!

Now later this year when I am one of the only ones at the farmers market with super sweet hybrid corn things will be different good corn will sell for 2-3 for a dollar.

Oh and we are waaay low on moisture way low also our dryland field corn is just now 2' tall it will probably not make corn if we dont get a few inches here soon. Dont have any sweet corn nearby to know how its doing but probably ok if its irrigated just my guess? (over 110 here all last week till now sucks)

I was in one Walmart this morning that had corn for 20 cents an ear. I was also in a Kroger's that had 6 for a dollar. Kroger's also had corn with most of the shucks & silk removed (not all) then wrapped in clear plastic that was 3 for $1.09.:laughing:

Car Doc, I tried growing sweet corn at home for one year and what I harvested tasted much better than what you could buy at a store but you are correct if one figures out the time and expense of growing your own it is costly. I for one do not like sweet corn much so I rarely buy it.
