My wife and I are rookie tractor owners, having just purchased a Kubota B7800 and a Woods PHD35 so we can fence our property ourselves.

Anybody have any input on the suggested sequence for attaching the post hole digger to the PTO of the Kubota?

First off, I store mine standing up. I dug a hole with it and put a railroad tie in the ground and keep it chained to that.

I just back up to it and hook up the top link piece while still keeping the rest of the PHD chained to the tie. I then hook up the pto as it is a pain once you put the lower link piece on. Then i fasten the lower link piece onto the arms and then pin it to the PHD. Unchain the rest of the PHD and I'm ready to go.

Good luck and be careful. Also remember no matter how tempting or how much faster you think it will go digging holes, stay away from it when digging holes, because it takes a split 2nd and you will wrapped around the auger or the pto. Don't try to wobble it, push down on it or lean on it to give it more pressure. It could cost you dearly in the long run.

Thanks, Steve. The dealer who sold it to us also suggested storing it standing up; he said just chain it to one of your fence posts, but I like your idea of just placing a railroad tie or end post wherever it is that I would always like to store it. And we will be very careful, we know all too well the dangers of the auger and pto and getting tangled up into it all.

I find the PHD to be the most awkward thing to hook up to the tractor. No matter how you end up doing it, it will wear you out. Having tried all kinds of ways to store it, I've found the easiest way is to hang it from a tree limb by a chain hoist. That allows you to raise it up and down and also jiggle it around to get it positioned. I built my S-I-L a PHD stand based on ideas and photos on this board. Again, it is basically a "gallows" with the PHD suspended by a chain hoist. It has wheels so it can be moved around and positioned where you want it.

Wrestling with an octopus is how my dealer describes attaching a post-hole digger to a tractor, which is why I got rid of mine after doing that little backbreaking chore about three times.

I hang mine from two points, one directly over the gearbox, and one about halfway down the beam.

This hangs it in the position that it mounts on my tractor in.

It allows hooking and unhooking with a minimum of hassle, and is particularly easier with the Pats system (which I use)

I back up too it, hook the pats on the lower two links, get out, secure my top pin, then secure the drive shaft, and away I go.

I made mine portable as we are a landscape business and we take the PHD to the job site to dig holes for shrubs and trees.

To pick the thing off the ground and mount it is terrible. The best I can suggest is two and only two folks, then watch closely that you do not end up pinched.

I hang mine between 2 - 4x4 posts with a removable 4x4 that it hangs on. See pics. Unlike some of the other people here, I find that this implement is relatively easy to mount on the tractor and I do it by myself in only a few minutes.:) After you have done it a couple of times you will see how easy that it really is.;)
