I like the deere 5520 4wd. What does the competion have to compete with it. Kubota m8400, Ford TL series or TN series. Is TL series closer to the deere 6000 series? What about Massey? I'm probably 12 to 24 months out on this decision.

What would you be using it for?

brushhog, box blade, probably a backhoe, loader work, disc work, planter, and maybe eventually haying round bales.

A 5320 or 5420 will do what you want and save you quite a few dollars. As for New Holland the TN 65 thru TN 75 would also do what you want. I do not know much about the Kubota to answer any questions about them but when I was looking I bought the TN 65 and I do everything you thought about except the backhoe because we have a regular TLB. I pull a 4 row planter and a 10 foot disk and maintain roughly 100 acres. I bought the TN series because it was a better tractor then the 5300 from JD at the time and I like the dealer much better. Look at the options on the tractors and compare to make sure each tractor has the same options for the price you are quoted. I have not checked the specs on the new 20 series but they should be much better than the 5000 series I compared with. How many acres do you plan on working and what do you want to plant?

I have a 5520 4wd, and when I was shopping for it, I compared it with the NH TL90. The TL had a much higher 3ph lift capacity (more than double which made me suspect that the numbers were not comparing apples to apples), better loader specs, and better forward visibility, but was priced about 4k higher than what I paid for my Deere. The Deere had better hydraulics, and is... well.. a Deere. I chose the Deere over the TL mostly due to price and Dealer. I disagree with the reply saying that you should use a 5320 for your needs. I would not go with any less than 65 PTO HP, since you had indicated that you might be pulling a round baler. I think that even the smallest models require about 65 HP. Also the 5320 and smaller tractors have 2.9L three cylinder engines, while the 5420 and 5520 have 4.5L four cylinder engines. I have always thought that there is no substitute for displacement. I did not consider the Kubota, as I have not really heard much about their utility size tractors. I imagine based on how many people seem to like their compact tractors, that their larger models are also very good, but I have heard more good things about the Deere and NH models in this size range. Talk to dealers in your area, as well as to farmers in your area if you can, and see what brand / dealer combination they put their money behind.

The smallest round balers can be run with a 40 hp tractor, I agree with get the biggest but if money is a consideration he can drop down a step or two and save a few thousand. It would have cost me $3k to jump from a TN 65 to a TN 75 and I could not see the cost for what little HP I would gain when I did not need it. Just trying to open other options for him and others who read this.

Good advice about saving $$$. The price difference in the Deeres is about $2k per model according to my dealer. I was not aware that there were any round balers which could be run with only 40HP. If I were trying to save money on the tractor purchase, I would probably go down to a 5420, but I think that for the $2k extra, I would stay with the larger 4 cylinder engine. Good advice Robert.

Robert,
I think that round baler that you are talking about requires 45 hp and it is only a max. 750 lb. bale that you can make with it. There are no customization features and you are very limited on it. You're right about saving bucks but it costs alot more to trade later if you want to do big round bales.

BTW I love your deer! That was a great pic of that whitetail. Do you raise them for hunting or ?.

Thanks guys,

I'm just starting to look. The fellow doing my hay now has a 6200 deere, around 65 hp and bales a 6' dia x 4' wide bale on a new JD baler. Sounds like he is at the min end of hp. Both the 5420 and the 5520 have the 4cyl., the 5520 is turbo'ed. The 5420 and 5520 have better hydraulic flow than the 5220 and 5320 too.

I mentioned a planter earlier, what I meant was something like a drill or what the neighbor calls a culti-packer. Wanting to improve the pasture.

I'm partial to the deere because its a deere, but like rf33 said the TL specs appear to be significatly (sp) better in some areas.

Gonna be out for the next week. Catch-up with yall next week.

We raise them mostly for other farms or for people who want a couple for pets.
