I was looking through the manual for my 4310 and ran across this:

Engine oil pressure light should go out within 5 seconds.

NOTE: Set engine speed at full throttle if indicator light does not go out after 10 seconds.

This doesn't seem right to me, am I the only one thinking this way?

I don't know. One time I started my 2210 at 20 below I got no oil pressure and the motor stopped from lack of lube. I had to stick a magnetic heater on the oil pan to get the oil to pump. Not sure if revs would have gotten it going or not.

I don't move the throttle to high RPM when starting. I start it with the throttle all the way back and use the foot throttle to give the engine some RPM (once it catches..then I move the hand throttle enough to get 1500 RPM). That's where it stays until the engine is warmed a bit.
Fortunately, my 790 oil lamp flickers for a second or so, then goes out...so I've never had to worry about the light being on more then that.

My manual does state the same thing about full throttle starting though.

You guys in the northern latitudes should have block heaters on your tractors.

Yeah this seems a little odd to me also. Most of the engines I have been around if they dont come up with some pressure after a few seconds something is wrong. Seems that they might be wanting you to do that to speed up the pump to get it to pick up and pump the oil faster. But, in the mean time it would seem that the internal components might run dry for a few seconds at higher RPMs....

Best protection in cold starts is to use a 0wxx to 5wxx oil. Best is 0wxx. Shuck any of that 15wxx oil you're using. Think you can get 0w40 from JD, if you want the xxw40 stuff. According to my oil use temperature chart on the 4010, 40 isn't needed.

The oil pressure light on my 4010 goes off almost instantaneously with the 0w30 Mobil 1 I'm using in it. Almost no hydraulic lift hammer any more with it in my VW Cabrio. It had hydraulic lift hammer with 5w30.

I'd definitely not follow that advice about revving it up if the oil light is still on after 10 seconds.

I have to use about 1/2 throttle on my 4010 to start it in unheated carriage house. I make sure that I keep the revs below 1500 rpm, but us of pretty good amounts of throttle is necessary to get it started, mainly to keep it running as it'll just start, shudder and die. Same was true in our 1983 240D and older 220D. The 2010 VW TDI just starts, with no clatter nor shudder, sorta almost like a gasoline engine. The TDI is a wonder car.
