Cold cut saw

You mentioned LONG pieces, but nothing about size or thickness - a 20' length of 1" square tube with .095" wall only weighs just over 22 pounds, but a 20' length of 2" square tube with .250" wall is 108 pounds - might be a bit much for a "wood oriented" support - I work with a LOT of square tube, some angle/channel/etc, also in a "portable" environment, so I feel your pain - I figure out ways to "get around" the limitations, but it REALLY slows me down, and I'm not even CLOSE to my goal of a second shop with 2-post lift/steel rack/small forklift/crane/everything else -

One of my "tuits" is a pair of "offroad" roller stands, 3 legs (or 4, with adjusters) infinitely adjustable with a combo of "jack stand" pins + acme threads for "between holes", that can handle at least 400 pounds (weight of a 20' length of 10" channel)

My point is (I know it's in there SOMEWHERE ) what you can do with whatcha GOT depends somewhat on the SCALE you wanna DO it on...

Example - I've built several 8'x12' roof frames out of .120" wall 2x2 tube in a 12'x12' shed - gravel floor NOT level, standing on an 8' ladder for some of the welds - they're part of the roof frame I'm putting over a 20' container - this will shade the container (I'll be working inside) and give me a 24'x15' area OUTSIDE the container with a LEVEL concrete slab and 11' headroom so I can work on my tractors/backhoe/cars OR drive THROUGH it with a full load of firewood (neccessary for access to woodshed) -

Nooo, I don't PREFER to do things that way, but I'm about $50k and several "ergs" short of that second shop

Anyway, if there's any way I can help OTHERS avoid any of the BS I go thru to get some of the simplest things done, I try - so the more info you share about what you're up to the better I (we) can help... Steve

Heres a job for your new cold cut saw. Cut an angle on the end of your hitch. Is like sharpening the end, much easier to find the hole. Its almost as good as Steves method but You don't have to cut the receiver hole out.

Measure 3/4" off a corner & cut. I don't know the angle. Might be a little puzzle to get it clamped. I know most of you fellers only use pintle hitches with a solid 2" bar but was posting this On the off-chance anothe member still uses square-tube receivers. Maybe I'm the only one with this small-time homeowner eqpt. :D :D :D :D :D :D

Also can be done with an abrasive, sawzall, hacksaw, smoke wrench, angle grinder. You'll thank yourself every time.

Or, you could just BUY one from the auto parts store :D I needed a second 1-1/4" hitch for the second small car (Subaru Outback) - picked one up at the auto parts, Reese IIRC, and it was ALREADY cut at an angle like that - seems like it works as well as mine, and you're right - it's easier to fab... What RPM do the cold cut blades want?
Could a guy mount a cold cut blade on his abrasive cut off saw?
My 14" dry cut saw is 1600 RPM.

A true cold saw, with the coolant bath, runs 150-300 rpm.

Okay well how about this one... I just realized instead of a double bevel mitre, Evolution has a 'single' bevel mitre version for $199 Amazon Prime/free two day shipping. Can only bevel from one side but you have full 45deg in each direction on one axis at least. I know, I know... but take a look. The mitering is what is attracting me.

I understand and feel the same about paid advertising and wasn't intending to promote ChuckE... that said here is a review (probably paid, but not ChuckE) on youtube. I actually thought this was a pretty informative and fair review and you get a good look at the build/material quality.

It's just that I won't be using it everyday and did I mention the easy miter cuts! :licking: This will be a dedicated metal cutting saw... first thing would be to upgrade the blade. I already have a fancy Dewalt 12in double bevel mitre and the optional stand. I could mount this on the same stand.

I thought that saw worked awesome, never seen anything like that before, I'll put it on my wish list.

The one I'm trying to make work (electrically) is 2 speed, 20 & 60 rpm!
I got the motor rewound from 575v to 440. Now I need to figure out a phase converter and (I guess) step up transformers. Any clues?

"My vote (hopefully before long) stays with the Evosaw380 from discountsteel.com (no affiliation, no commission, my only motivation here is to hopefully keep people who have NOT pissed me off (if you're reading this, that's you) from buying something they may regret later... "

I must be one of them in good standing then, I give this post two thumbs up for not being politically correct.

B4 friction 'chop saws' were commonly available I shop rigged a 1/2 HP on a pivot arm with a set of bearings to create one that worked well for me for a long time.
I guess using the same principal and a different set of pullyes I could rig one easily.
Hmm, another project.

I thought this was bogus so I watched it anyhow just to confirm it dont work, got to have right saw for right blade. I did learn that this video should of been rated R for language and there are people that swear more than me, I usually have to get upset first before speaking in tongues. I did like the guys attitude about things, 300:>"Factory Retention Tool" that was humorous, I use factory retention tools all the time.

You definitely won't find a new one, and will be hard pressed to find a good used one for five bills. They are generally for hard core production where you need to gang cut 5/8 pickets to do a mile and a half of OI railing and the like. The dry cut carbide blade units that resemble the wood chop saws are a pretty good option for the person who wants clean, accurate cuts and is tired of skinny-wheeling everything.

Lol, got hooked on his videos a month or 2 ago. Been working my way through em. Lots of entertaining language in there, but lots of good mechanical & scientific info too.
